    Hi All

Its normlly around this time i get my clubs re-gripped for the year ahead and usually i just go with what the shop says might be good, ive never actually paid much attention, i thought id actually look into it and it seems golf pride are top of the pile, but i cant tell if tour velvet or dd2 or new decade are suitable...ive felt them all...maybe its my untrained feel :),but i cant tell a massive difference, anyone any opinions or about to get regripped?

    Where do you get those grips? Do you buy them online and fit them yourself or have someone do it for you? I like the look of these ones;

In my opinion the best place to get grips as shown to me by a member here:

    http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/GolfGrips.html

    Your choice:

Thanks - having never done it before, is there a kit I can buy that has the glue/tape I need?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 150 ✭✭ccmp

Yes kit available from gamola golf also.

double sided tape and petrol does the job

I got a full set of the golf pride decade multi compound from this place on eBay in the US - it worked out cheaper than Gamola when I got them a few months ago and the guy was very efficient to deal with.

    http://sporting-goods.shop.ebay.com/Grips-/47324/i.html?LH_SpecificSeller=1..backspingolf&rt=nc&Brand=Golf%2520Pride&_adv=1&_dmd=1&_dmpt=Golf_Clubmaking_Products_US&_fln=1&_fsct=&_in_kw=1&_ipg=50&_oexkw=&_okw=&_sop=12&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282&_udhi=&_udlo=

Installed them myself then using masking tape, double sided tape and white spirit (less messy than petrol I hear). Quite an easy and therapeutic job ;-)

    Give it a go !

Can you put the grips on yourself? Or get someone to them..

Most pro shops will do them for you, but it works out cheaper to do it yourself...

Might do that with my clubs.. is it hard to re-grip them yourself? Or are ya just better off going to a pro shop?

Simple to do. The secret is in the white spirit. Holding your finger on the air hole, fill the grip with white spirit. Pour out the white spirit over the taped shaft and quickly slide the grip on over the tape. The white spirit removes the tackyness until it evaporates then the tape becomes sticky again. Now twist the grip until it's aligned. Normally there's a small inverted v or somthing similar to line up to the club head. Probably takes 15 minutes to do the 1st club and 3 minutes to do the last one !

Or put a tee in the hole in the grip ;)

Petrol? Thats a new one for me. White spirits is the (less flamable) way to go.

Thanks for the replys, i'll go with the gamola golf and order, i actually went to my local golf shop today and was told i couldnt test out any but they would do the job if i told them what specific one i wanted...i guess ill just have to take my chances

Did it myself this year. Its simple really. If your not to bothered just put the new tape directly over the old tape. Taking the old tape off is a pain.

No way I would do this unless you are looking for a thicker grip. How did you ever manage to get the old grips off without ruining the underlying tape ?

Personally, I have my grips built up with 2 layers of masking tape, before the double sided tape. Grips can be built up with 1-3 layers of tape depending upon how big you like them yourself.

Believe it or not there is a big different in grip size and feel between a grip with just an extra layer of masking tape underneath.

You should have a grip size that a) matches your finger length and b) matches your personal preference.

There's an offer in our pro-shop at the moment offering Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips x 9 for €70 (down from €90). Is this good?

Another offer is for "budget" ones for €45 (down from €72).

From a cost point of view, it seems to me to be cheaper to go with the €70 option rather than spending €50+ (as per the links above) on grips and then mucking them up myself. What does anyone else think?

I'm thinking about getting the Tour Velvet ones done.

Just to update on this "saga"

I ended up making an appointment with Martin Toner at Hazel Grove Golf Club, A member told me about him and he was very detailed in measuring up and fitting and i now have my set gripped with Lambkin over sized with 2 layers of tape and i have to say the difference is amazing, i cant belive i spent so long with regular grips, he also showed me his club balancing service and how nearly all of my clubs were im balanced to some degree, so part of the job was to make all the clubs balanced...i think he says that in order to have a consistent swing you need consistent club weight..or something to that effect, is it all just a con??? i have to say though my clubs do feel an awful lot better since the job was done!!

That's the swingweight you're talking about there and yes it is good to have it consistent across your clubs.

When you say he showed you his club balancing service and balanced your clubs, what exactly did he do ? add weights somewhere on your grips or clubheads ?

So how much did the grip fitting and balancing set you back per club ?

He added weight to the clubheads and put on much bigger grips with 2 layers of tape, when i went back he showed me my 5 and 7 which were now perfectly in balance as oppes to as first were the 2 couldnt have been more different so ALL my clubs now weigh the same and with the bigger grip the term swing easy finally makes sense, with the shop grips that were too small i was always actually "gripping" rather than just holding the club, with the new ones they sit in my hand but i dont have to apply a lot of pressure to keep hold of the club like before...cost i think was 25 per club which sounds expensive but i found the job and results to be brilliant and im a happier golfer!!

What he means is the site looks like something put together by a 12 year old, looks completely unprofessional and wouldn't exactly inspire confidence in the quality of your craftsmanship.

I'm not for a minute dismissing the quality of your work by the way, I've never heard anything good or bad about you.

anthony, how exactly do you think the attitude you are displaying on this thread is going to help attract customers to your business?
I could be mistaken of course, maybe you have too much business and are trying to drive potential customers away. In that case - you are doing well here, keep it up.

    Love that Loft,

anthonyt I really dont know why you are trying to defend your site so aggressively, I see that you have branched out from golf into organ (shaft) and head transplants, Shame your company hasnt looked into personality transplants.

    http://clubfit4u.com/html/used-shafts-and-heads-st9.html

Maybe spend your time on your website redevelopment rather than making a fool out of yourself on a public forum, and driving customers away.

Busy day, seems I've missed quite a bit. To Anthony, my apologies for not replying you you, early start today.

Seems to me you've got enough grief, somewhat warranted but you've obviously got some good advise to give so do yourself a favor and be a bit more diplomatic about it.

Here's my setup so interested in your professional opinion.

Might be difficult to get some info back from south Carolina but I'm sure I can squeez some information the next time I'm down in Naas. Interesting you dong like the project x, you wouldn't be the only one. The dispersion was by far superior to everything else we worked with

cool that is why custom fitting is alive and well, everyone has there own way of playing, swing, size, strength and so what works for you is not going to work for the guy you are playing with. This is why there is no standard in the golf industry each shaft maker will have there own idea what an x flex is or an s flex is cpm's is the only way to know what you have?nice talking to you outside of the noise.
