Am thinking of ruling out an estate for my new vehicle and getting an mpv instead. It must have good safety record, good mpg rating and large boot. Have approx 15k budget and no idea what to look out for! I'd appreciate any pointers. thanks

I'd go for a s-max with the two back seats down you have loads of room and it's fairly comfortable if you spend a lot of time in it

S-Max probably get best choice in the UK though.

Do you need 5, 6 or 7 seats? For kids, or adults?

What's your idea of a big boot? For instance, what do you drive now, and do you think the boot is tiny, or just a bit too small?

Number of passengers is crucial here.

Well, we've just had pur first kid and I am also a dj who has to travel a bit to gigs with quite a lot of gear so ideally an mpv that has foldable seats that gives flexible bootspace but also fit my wife and child (roadies :)) if required. I currently drive a megane and it can be quite a feat to fit everything! thanks

IMO, Not really. Boot space too.

Here are some figures from Which? car showing their (not the manufacturer's) measurements of boot capacity in litres for estate models.

Which? measure boot capacity up to the window line, both with rear seats in place (the min value) and with them folded (the max value)

    bmw 5 series 560 min, ? min
ford mondeo 530 min, 950 max
skoda superb 475 min, 810 max
volkswagon passat 475 min, ? max
skoda octavia ? min, 925 max
toyota avensis 455 min, ? max
    volvo S/V60 440 min, ? max
honda accord 450 min, 685 max
volkswagon golf 435 min, 840 max
renault laguna 395 min, 740 max
    audi a4 375 min, 710 max
vauxhall insignia 365 min, 755 max

For many, an estate looks much better than a MPV so a MPV isn't an option. But to put that into perspective the Touran based on the Golf Chassis and thus shorter (AFAIK) than most of these.

    Touran Length, 4405 mm
    Passat Saloon: 4765 mm,
    Passat Estate: 4774 mm

    Touran Boot space (7s) 121 (5s) 695 (2s) 1,913 (litres)

Many other MPV's are bigger. I remember trying and failing to get a bulky piece of furniture into a A4 estate. But the same item fit easily into the back of a K11 2dr Micra. The usable access for loading is as important as the capacity. Just something to bear in mind when looking at estates.

    S-Max 285 litres to 2,000 litres
    Galaxy 435 litres to 2,325 l

Toyota Corrolla Verso. 46 mpg average!! 7 seats or when the 2 back seats are folded down, you've got a large boot.
But then I would say that cause I have one for sale.

Fantastic ride quality from the Zafira. Worth a look.

Peugeot 308SW 1.6HDi. Not an MPV - the ONLY estate currently for sale which will take seven individual seats. Very flexible loadspace with a max of 2100 litres available - more room than an E Class estate! 53mpg and €156 tax so easy on the pocket. You won't get one for €15k here (very few available), but should just about manage a 2009 Sport trim from the UK.

But the OP only needs 3!

Coincidentally there's a Mothers & Babies supplement in today's Indo and there's a piece on MPVs in it. I only had a quick look but they mention the Focus C-Max and Peugeot 3008 (I think)

Too many factors will come on the scene ...
OK, you gave the budget, now, how many seats you actually need, how much boot space, main question in Ireland, what powerplant you are after, diesel or petrol, engine size is important ?

In 15k budget i would go defenately for Toyota Previa, similar to this:

We have just gone from a Megane Hatchback to a Ford Focus Estate.

Very happy with the change so far, boot wise - the buggy which took up most of the megane is now thouroughly lost in the back of the focus.

We ahd considered a Ford C-max, but couldnt find/get the budget to stretch to something in reasonable condition.

thanks for the suggestions guys, will investigate the models mentioned.
Ideally I'd like to fit all my dj gear, my wife and child and all the baby stuff
into the vehicle safely so I guess the estates are ruled out. I had a quick
look at an s max last night and its pretty nice. Will look at the opel, peugot
    and toyato models too. cheers
