    Hi

I live in Waterford and want to buy a car from a dealership in Dublin, Bestcar in Lwr Ballymount Rd in Walkinstown. I have arranged my own finance down here but the car company want a deposit of €500 to hold the car today, when they recieve the deposit they will put the car in my name and put it through the NCT and I can collect it Monday or Tuesday. I don't want to make two trips to Dublin so I won't have seen the car besides on their website or test driven it. Am I being an idiot ? I have done alot of searching and this is the car I want but I don't want to mess up either.

Never buy a car or give a deposit without seeing it and having it checked out. Why would you want it in your name before seeing it and driving it?

As rover james says... never pay for a car even a deposit on a car u never seen.....

make one trip, if it all checks out (mechanical, finance checks, ect) and is what you want, buy it, pay for it and do the paperwork, get your reciepts and make sure VLC is sent off, and drive car away....

You don't know that, pay no money until the car has been NCTd and examined by someone you trust.

A €60 tank of petrol to and from Dublin is a helluva lot cheaper than €500 if the car isn't right for whatever reason.

Personally speaking, I wouldn't be travelling a long way to view a car on the basis of a description given by a back street dealer. Ring any of them, ask about any car they're selling, and you'll be told it's fantastic.

Absolutely no way should anyone ever do this. As said above.

If your concerned about the NCT than im guessing the dealer could give you an NCT gaurantee on top of any other gaurantee you are getting. i.e. he would agree to cover the cost of anything needed to pass the test.

This would be a lot less risky than buying the car unseen even if it already has the test, as a car can pass the NCT while still being in need of costly repairs

What kinda car are you looking for Jackie and what's the budget? Their's bound to be a good deal somewhere closer to home/in munster.

By the way, is there a link to the car? I wont personally but others on here may be able to advise furter based on the dealer or even the car. That is if you want of course

OP, Ballymount is the 'Bermuda Triangle' of car dealers. You never know what's going to happen. It's madness to put a deposit down for a car that you've never seen, driven or had checked out. And if you give them the deposit and back out I guarantee you won't get the money back.

Here's one in Cork, I have absolutly no faith in the dealer but it might be worth a look on the merits of the car.

I've bought two cars off Jason for myself and my sister bought a car off him too. Can't fault him to be honest. His ole lad had a bit of a name alright back in the day.

Edit, I see it's John and not Jason selling this one, since John's stopped working from Friar's walk he has been with Jason on Tramore Rd. Wouldn't put me off really these days.

Thanks for all of the advice, after speaking to a few dealers I went against the Citreon. I have been looking for a diesel anyway so i'm going to look at a Ford Focus 1.8 TDi a bit closer to home. I crashed my car last week so need to replace it in a hurry so I was starting to get panicy and impulsive this morning. Thanks again :)
