So basically at the moment, in the fathers work, they have to carry out inspections every so often. This is logged on paper and then fed into an excel sheet when they get back to the workstation. So I want a tablet PC that the operators can bring with them instead of writing it onto sheets first.

    Requirements -
    - Can run word, excel (not sure if android can do this, should I look at windows tablets?)
    - Decent battery life
    - Internet access not important but a bonus (although I guess they all have them anyway)
    - Doesn't need to be feature rich or too high end, as in a media player or anything like that

I came across this one which might suit -

Ive also checked out a couple of cheapo ones on dealextreme, the build quality and that wouldnt bother me as it wont be in regular use, but the battery quality could be questionable.

Dunno which tablet to recommend but for the Office stuff for editing you can get this

Or maybe create some web forms if you have an IT dept for people to enter their data into (I dunno how much data your guys would be entering and how its format changes so that may not be feasible).

Tablets aren't for editing stuff, only for viewing really. Archos 101 you can plug in a full size keyboard, however I don't think many office apps will let you edit on Android. Wait a few months.

what exactly would they be putting into the excel documents, do you still need written signatures on forms or anything?

Truthfully without custom firmware and automatic updating of the data from the device I can't really see it being any advantage to use the current generation of tablets

There's an app called FSync that'll automatically sync folders up to an FTP when connected to WiFi. That's easy enough to set up.

There's also Dropbox but that requires the user to upload the file. Depends on how bright the users are though.

Ok well I found this app which seems to be what Im looking for

The whole point is that theres double entry occurring, marking the blank record sheets as the stuff is inspected then transferring the completed record sheets into an excel file on the computer back in the office. At least this way they could do the inspections then email the record straight from the tablet, cutting out a decent bit of tedious office work.
