Folks, currently have 03 1.8 vectra and a 1.0 corsa. Vectra has 130k miles on it so it will be the to go. Have been looking at a few cars

For the me the SAAB is in the lead, but honest john says the 1.9 TID seems to have a habit for eating other parts of the engine, then comes the mondeo and then the vetta, i know the jetta is probably the boring option but i like them but dislike passats having drove a few of them via work.

    Budget is about €15k, thoughts?
Just to add am doing about 15-25k miles a year.
    Dont want a Skoda.

If you have a family, I'd definately recommend the Mondeo over the other two. Either way it's a big comfortable car with good handling. Other cars may have better fuel economy though.

Presume you're looking for a diesel? My, admittedly limited, experience of saab diesels is that they're rough. We've nicknamed a colleague's 9-5 diesel 'the tractor'. I've no experience of a modern Jetta.

How about an Avensis? Bit dull maybe but reliable with good resale value.

Not yet to the family but probably wont be far away thats why I'm thinking the mondeo. The avensis is a bit boring but the main reason is the OH's family have had 2 08 and 09 ones and both have had a multtude of problems and been back to the garage several times.

Rough ? You must be kidding, right ? I bet it was a 2.2 - which makes it the old GM 2.2 unit, and that, that is a tractor alright, and, years old.

The 1.9's are light years ahead - and are as fitted to Opel/Vauxhall/Fiat/Alfa - and is a peach.

I have the 150bhp Tid -but the 120bhp is arguably better, and lighter on juice. I just bought it 'cos I like the look of it...... :D

Compared to those, the VAG 1.9's are tractor units. :p

My 1.9Tid has just had it's first repair - a dirty EGR valve, but apart from that hasn't missed a beat yet.

If you're looking for reliable, in a VAG, avoid the 2.0tdi's - rubbish. Stick with the older design 1.9.

Would love one tbh but the other half half is anti alfa after having a 156 previously and i doubt she'd ever go back there again! It was a money pit

Get a Mondeo ST TCDI. Last model was 2006 i think.

Best car i have ever driven. MPG was excellent, beautiful to look at and buckets of power. Pick one up for around the 10k mark i'd say.

Well the 159 and 9-3 share the same 1.9 diesel engine which is made by Fiat. The 159 is also alot more reliable than the 156.

Cheers John, but will be going for 2008/2009 if the budget can stretch to it, budget is €15k + whatever i can get for the vectra which is probably about €500 :) will be keeping this car for quite some time.

I bow to Galwaytt's superior knowledge re Saabs!

Still voting for the Mondeo but what about a Mazda6?

I was under the impression from various posts on her that Mazda + Diesel = problems and Mazda + Petrol is the only combination to go for?

Well obviously I was talking about the 2.2 diesel which doesn't suffer catastrophic engine failure due to its closed-loop type DPF..... :P
