What did you do with your VHS tapes?

In this age of Bluray, DVDs and DivX etc, what did you do with your video tape collection? I have about 50 of the darn things, none of which I watch anymore so just wondering what the hell I'm gonna do with them. The obvious answer would be charity shops but I'm not sure they even take them anymore.

Burn the lot of them? Make some kind of artistic sculpture with them? Keep them in the interest of a quaint link to the past? Use as doorstops?

    Innovative suggestions welcome! :)

I recorded over all the Disney ones with porn and sold them at a car boot sale to unsuspecting parents.

They do love the taste of plastic.

I have no idea where all mine went to!

Suspect when I moved out, the mater did away with my collection of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle videos.

    Bitch.

I'm holding onto them for the inevitable nuclear holocast when, for some reason, the only things that will work will be VHS players...................and a TV, of course.

Drop them into your local Charity Shop.

The one in Galway takes them. Burn the porn first.

    Bin them.
If you pay by weight peg them in your neighbours bin, a box of those frigging things is heavy.
Or remove the tape from the cassettes and decorate the outside of some guys house you dont like with it.
Maybe you could give them away as birthday presents?

In a fit of frustration at the British legal system, I unwound all the celluloid tape of my VHS collection, and wrapped it around my head while muttering incoherent gibberish

Still have mine, I find that VHS has a warmer, more natural quality than Bluray or DVD.

I don't know what happened to them. But VHS tapes caused me so much pain and hassle as a kid.
Remember putting in a tape of the turtles and then it would be all blurry and the sound would be going mental.

Transferred porn to DVD and threw out the rest.

It's pays to jerk off to High Definition pornography.

Me too ... I suppose I could convert them to a digital file but then the OH wouldn't be annoyed at them cluttering up the bottom shelf of my DVD collection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭CaSCaDe711

Chucked out a heap load a few years ago (creating loads of extra room to store the dvds :)). Still have 4 or 5 in the press that I must archive to dvd soon, before the tape turns to powder, no porn on them, just nice old recordings from MTV, Party Zone and Chill Out Zone. Ahh, the memories  :D

IWhat did you do with your VHS tapes?

I was trapped on a deserted island in the Pacific and used the magnetic tape to tie off some logs on a small raft that I built.

Hmm what did I do with all that softcore 90s porn.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,739 ✭✭✭✭starbelgrade

I never had any VHS tapes as I never had a video player.

Still have loads of cassette tapes though - mostly with stuff recorded off the radio & "mix tapes".

I play them from time to time when I'm feeling sentimental.

Ever notice how people still say things like "I'm just going to stay in and rent a video" or still call xtra vision "the video library"... weird.

It's not really. People calling VHS tapes 'videos' is weird. Video just that, video. It's no more to do with VHS tapes as it is DVDs.

DON'T THROW THEM OUT PLEASE :)

Give them to your local Charity Shop..

Most Charity Shops I know sell them for 50c or €1 each..

Better the Charity getting the money than you paying bin charges..

    :)

I made a coffee table out of them

And by "coffee table" I mean "stack of tapes I put stuff on!"

I still have my My Little Pony video though, I watched it a few weeks ago

Actually, quick question for somebody who might know.

I have a tape with all my family recorded on it from 1987. My father is on it and he died ten years ago, so would love to get it put on DVD. Only problem is, we put it in storage, among other things, when we moved house a few years ago, and somehow it got damp and am worried about its condition. Is there anywhere anybody knows of to clear it of moisture and put it onto DVD? Thanks

I still use them. I bought a few Naked Gun videos in Empire Records (or Tower Records, can never remember the name) in Carlow a few months ago.
I still use cassettes too. The car doesn't have a cd player and I'll be fucked if I'm paying €15 for one of those mp3-to-cassettee tupe devises!
Cassette tapes all the way for me.

You know you can buy those in €2 shops right? And online for less than a euro.

Really! I think I'll have to invest in one. I really love the feeling of playing tapes though. I'm such an old man lol.

They're a pain in the arse when they jam though.

I actually still remember taping songs off CDs, Having to hold the feckin record button and timing it precisely.

Found this for you after a quick google, I haven't used them but you could give them a ring. I'm sure there is others. I'm sure they probably unwind the tape and clean it all. There are probably lots of people doing it around the country..

Lol, still do it. Taping songs off youtube is a handy solution for the not so technologically advanced like myself. Why do they have to make all this new technology so complicated! I had to ask my friend how to put songs onto my mp3 player because I just hadn't a clue.
