    Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this q. What insurance companies do use for high perf cars. I just upgraded from a 1.2 l punto to a 3.6l bmw m5. Quinn laughed at me when i talked to them.

Goin through the VRT process atm, hopefully she'll be regg'd this week.

    1991 E34 Macou Blue M5 RHD

Also if you know of any garage's they will do services on these type cars please let me know :-)

Try FBD they insured me on a 320i last year Third party f&t for 1050 euro. I was only 20 with 2 years no claims, and i pressume that would be down as a performance car.

Most other companies wouldnt insure me with the next cheapest being Aviva at €4,500 or around that.

    Hope this helps

The only way to find out is to ring around and try and try and try until you get a deal that you reckon is worth the money, dont bother with online systems, try ringing direct and using brokers.

Bearing in mind that your car is '91 you might want to consider XS Direct, they specialise in people who can't get a reasonable claim elsewhere but there's a 4500 excess on the policy. The insurance is practically useless as you have to pay this out if you have an accident but it allows you to legally drive the car.

    What age are you?

Was going to ask the same thing. If you have a policy with Quinn they will give you a quote with a bit of persuasion but I dunno how reasonable it'll be

I done well with FBD this year on a 3 litre bmw. A few other places were quite competitive too. Quinn Direct were not competitive at all.. they just wanted to get rid of me.

thanks for all the replies, I will definitely start ringing around. FBD does look good, based on the web form but doesn't go up to 3.6. Once 3rd party/theft is around a grand or less Im fine with that. That XS people thats mental basically an insurance policy for driving and never claiming lol!

Im 30, with 1 yr no claims as a named driver so worth diddly squat! The wife tho will go on this, with me as named. I like FBD's open drive mean we can do one policy for both the cars, prob do it in her name tho she has more no claims.

The export cert didn't come in today so will have to get on to the dvla tomorrow, gonna get stung for the vrt fee if i dont get sorted by 31st :/ Well annoyed with them we had a photo copy of the prev owner log and they wouldn't accept it, but nowhere on their site did it say they didn't accept photocopies. Rang the dvla they said it would take 6-8weeks to get this, it would be quicker to get an export cert which we can use in the prev owner log's place.

The trial's n tribulations, but it'll be worth it

If you're with Quinn currently and you have bought the Bmw they have to offer you a quote!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17 m5alive

i rang them up first, and they said they wouldn't insure either of us on the bmw. I dont think they have to, they can refuse. The reason they gave was that the engine size was outside what they would insure people on. TBH every time i talk to them my opinion of them lowers

If you had rang them first off and said you had the car bought and it was in your possesion I'm fairly sure they're obliged to offer you a quote, let it be 10,000 or what ever!

They insure me on a 3.5 and it's currently quite reasonable. Not looking forward to my renewal letter in a few weeks time though. It seems they are increasing rates dramatically.

Yeh mine was up 40% from last year, ended up getting it for 50% less than Quinn's quote.

How do people get modified insurance, i'm with quinn as nobody will consider quoting me due to adding 80 bhp to a 90 bhp car :( paying 1400 at 21 which is ok but if it was 90 bhp it would be 500 ish  i wouldnt mind but when i told them the mods they hadnt a clue what i added to it after explaining alot

Try a broker. I found it impossible to get a decent quote (23/f/4 yrs ncb) via the normal channels. My broken got me a quote within days for 670 fully comp on my '87 Scirocco with XS. Quinn, Axa, etc "didn't insure those cars" and Aviva wanted 1300.

Fully comp might be stretching it a bit there, if you have a crash you'll end up paying for most of it. Well 4.5k anyway. Prob still worth the risk in your case though.

I didn't think those old Scirocco's were that powerful, how come Quinn and AXA wouldn't quote you?

It produces an earth shattering 90bhp. Both Quinn and Axa said they just didn't insure the model (). Car is garaged most of the year anyway so the Aviva quote was a bit of a stinger.

i.e. it's not on their current database so it's a "computer sez no" job.
    Completely useless...:pac:

Too old I'd imagine, insurance companies are seriously under regulated when it comes to what they want and dont want to accept. Some wont even insure cars over 10 years old now

It's something like 3500-4000 excess, so you'd probably end up paying out the most if you did crash... while they'll probably quote, it's really just paying to get the car on the road instead of for insurance...

It seems to depend on who you get on the day with Quinn. I recently bought an em1 vti. One woman said point blank no I had to be 25 to insure it. I rang back the next day saying I had bought the car. The nice young lady popped me on hold for about 3 or 4 minutes and came back with a healthy premium for €1340. Not bad for a 20 year old on a vtec with everything declared.

Just buy the car and someone will quote you happy :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

As I already said if you have bought the car they have to offer you a quote. Although technically they should of had you on their system already trying to get a quote and not given it to ya!
