Surgery while having period?

Before I start just want to say sorry for the kind of icky nature of this question.

Anyway, i'm booked in to have my four wisdom teeth removed this coming Thursday. I had totally put it out of my mind until today. While discussing it with my OH I realised that I might have my period on that day. I say might because i'm due to start today (can feel cramps coming on) and I normally last 3-5 days. My periods of late have been quite light so I might get lucky, but just in case i'm wondering if anyone knows how I might get around this?

I've been under general anesthetic before and I know they give you those awful mesh panties to wear, but what if I still need to use a pad? Do they let you? God the thought of it is kind of freaking me out now!

    Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I know it's probably stating the obvious, but you should call the hospital and they'll be able to tell you. I'm sure it's not the first time they'd have encountered this.

I was in James for a minor procedure last year and just wore a pad with them silly mesh pants..................and i might advise wearing one just in case you are due on ;)

don't be worrying about it, i've had my period going in for surgery and said it to the nurse on the morning and it really is no big deal...its just another normal bodily function and unless its something that directly relates to the procedure, it doesn't matter to them (and why should it in fairness?!).

These are trained professionals OP (and grown adults!!), although it matters to you - in regards to using a tampon or a pad etc (they will give you a pad to wear - which is not a big deal...and its no diffrent to a normal pad - its just because having a tampon in under general aneasthetic isnt a good idea just IN CASE something goes wrong, which is SOOOOO rare), they've seen this a million times before and they really dont care about it...honestly...its no big deal - to health professionals its just like having a runny nose, seriously, dont be stressing over it!

best of luck with the wisdoms - hopefully you'll get huge relief when they're out, i hear they're a fekkin killer!!!

    Thanks Guys,

I am going to ring the hospital in the morning anyway to check if it's outpatient or inpatient so i'll double check then.

I just really wanted to maybe hear from someone who's been there.. so thanks.

I feel a lot better. I just hadn't a clue and of course my google search only ended up freaking me out even more! More fool me, should have just come here first.

    Cheers.

    Hi OP,

I had my wisdom teeth out, and i dont rememeber havin to wear those pants, in fact i did not, i had my clothes on and i just had to take off my top so the gown could go on.

Its scary thinking about the OP, but they give you this gas stuff that makes you all warm n fuzzy! you are grand, i was sooooo worred about it that it took me 4 years till my teeth were really sore to get it sorted and it was much easier then i thought, after your on painkillers and they are fine too!

Nothing to worry about there at all with your period comin on, just wear leggins and a long tight top so your all is covered for extra reassurance and then, the gown will fit over the slim top as well!

    All the best.

I had my tonsils out while 'riding the crimson wave'. Nothing to worry about.

I had my wisdom teeth out nearly two years ago and didn't have to wear mesh panties.

I had to remove most of my own clothes (I was allowed to wear my own underwear, but that was all) and obviously the hospital gown.

You'll be fine OP, as said by other posters, check at the hospital, it's nothing they haven't been asked before.

    Good luck.

Thanks so much for your replies. I feel 100% better now. Still worried about the actual surgery though... well actually the pain afterwards.
I had my tonsils out a few years ago and the pain afterwards was horrible. I really can't see it being that bad though so i'm sure it'll be grand.
I'm just going to put it out of my mind till Wednesday now.
This is one of the reasons i love boards. Where else could I go to get sound advice from people who have been through the same situation?!

    Thanks again.

I had mine out as a youngster and they gave me some lovely Vicodin or something similar....so I slept a lot and had very little pain afterwords. In fact, for me, it was only bad when someone made me laugh or smile too much. I'd say I was absolutely 100% fine after about 3 days or so. And with the painkillers it wasn't unbearable or anything.
Good luck! And think how nice it will be to be pain free when those teeth are gone :)

hey OP, I had all 4 wisdom teeth out under general anaestethic a while back and it was fine. They ask you if you're on your period in the pre-anaestethic form which is just procedure but I don't think it'll be a big deal. I just had to wear the gown and my dressing gown over it, you can keep most everything else on. The pain afterwards is crap for about a week but they give you all sorts of nice drugs and a letter to take a week off school or work or college or whatever so make the most of it! I spent my time in a haze of painkillers eating ice cream and angel delight:) It does take a while to recover but believe me it is sooo worth it in the long run to get those wisdom teeth out if they need to go! Best of luck!

OP here. It turns out I was panicking needlessly. I seem to be coming right to the end of my period now so will be fine by tommorrow. I have to say i'm liking these nice short, light ones i'm getting these days. I don't know whats changed and don't care!
Unfortunately for me i'm self-employed so no such luck as taking any time off. I'll take it easy though, well as much as I can.
Thanks so much for all your words of wisdom and comfort. I'm looking forward to a good nights sleep tonight in preparation.
