Hey, we have had a team going for a while now and we have finally got around to comms and all the extras. Any advise on a good system that wont blow the bank. At the moment we need a decent walkie talkie system and we are looking at wither throat mikes or Bowman head pieces.

    Thanks guys

From my experience the best option is the bowmans over the throat mic, i find the throat mics to be temperamental at best

also the bowmans replicas can be picked up from element of example are excellent value and you can pick up ptt's for almost any radio

i'll second that, on the team we tried a lot of diffrent sets with the radios we have and the best seemed to be the bowman style ones.

We tried a lot of style headsets and Bowmans and the Swimmer Style ones seem to work out the best both in terms of hearing and being heard

found throat mics unless you spendt time setting them up carfully very picky. Plus being able to use various PTTs mean ou can pick them up fairly cheaply and leave a PTT on each vest / webbing set you have so if you need to change all you have to is unplug the headset and clip it back in .

One of the most popular radios I've seen in the field is the Motorola XTR446. They seem to be well made, are reported to be reliable and best of all won't break the bank as you can get a pair on Pixmania for only €83.

In terms of headsets the Bowman is rightly popular but one thing you need to make sure of is that you order the correct PTT. For example, eHobby sell both the Cavalvy Elite II Bowman and the Element version of same, they also have the corresponding PTTs. What you need to be aware of is they are not cross-compatible as the Cavalvy Bowman/PTT uses a 5-pin DIN connector whereas the Element uses the Standard Military Plug and other manufacturers use different connectors again.

Think they are a little more than 83

OK, you can pay €150+ if you want, I'll settle for €82.66

I have an XTR446 and a Cavalvy Bowman with U94. Apart from being a bit on the loud side in my ear (options being mute, a little louder than I'd like, and seven levels of definitely too loud) I've found it to be a really good setup for reception and reports on my transmission quality have been glowing.

Of course, the problem with radios is that they're only as good as the worst one on the team.
