fertilizer units

Can Anyone give a good explanation or at link to one that explains how bags of fertilizer are labeled, what is meant by units per acre and how many units per acre should be spread and how many units in a bag? (This should be no problem to those green cert holders! :D)

27:2.5:5 has 27 units of nitrogen 2.5 of p and 5 of k. In a 50 kg bag, it works out about 13.5 kgs of N etc
