Golf Suspension

Hi All, I have a 2004 Golf TDi with 85k Miles and a suspension spring went in my car yesterday. The Car was parked and I heard a loud bang and the alarm went off. When I looked at the car I saw that it dropped down on the offside front left of the car. The spring is broken, making the car undriveable due to wheel scraping on the wheel arch. I'm glad it didn't go when I was on the Motorway. This has never happened to any of my cars before. Is this unusual ? Does anyone know what it will cost to fix ? Thanks !

mk4 or 5 golf?? you probably will be able to pick up a spring or a complete shock in a breakers yard. shouldn't cost too much to fit.. you probably will need wheel alignment done after

Not unusual i snapped the two rear springs within 50000 miles of new on 1.4 mkiv. Alot of driving over speed humps every day. Very easy to change yourself, need a coil compressor. The springs were about 25 stg each from VW in the UK, and also get the rubber donut that wears which attaches to it. I bought 2, replaced the broken one and the other snapped 10k miles later.
