    Hi All,

I’m looking for some advice on these two cars. Do anyone have any experience of them or have anything good/bad to say about them? Is there anything in particular I should watch out for with them?

    1. 2008 Citroen C5 1.6HDI Dynamic
    2. 2008 Ford Mondeo 1.8 TDCI Zetec

Both cars are one owner from new with full service history. The C5 has 35,000 miles on the clock while the Mondeo has covered 45,000 miles. The Mondeo is coming in 1,000 euro more expensive than the C5. Is it worth the extra 1000 for the Mondeo considering it has an extra 10,000 miles on the click?? I’m looking at keeping whichever car I choose for 3/4 years so reliability and relativity low running costs are important to me.

    Thanks.

I personally think the c5(x7) is ahead of the mondeo.
Saying that I have always had a softspot for the french...:D

I'd test drive both and make my decision then......:)

I prefer the c5 too and lol I love how it lifts when you turn the engine one... :P Its just more fun. But the Mondeo would be away better drive sen as its bigger engine. Mondeo would be more reliable.

They can do that lifting thing with springs now? Daaaaammmmmmn, them french are guuuuuuud.

Only the 2.0Hdi top of the range has the pneumatic suspension in the new C5, so the 1.6Hdi doesn't have that going for it.

Personally, I don't like the french stuff - find the seating position all wrong, but I'm also not a huge fan of the current Mondeo either. Mondeo just feels too big, and there is a gaping hole in the torque delivery with that 1.8 engine.

I know we have a couple of 08 C5 1.6Hdi's on fleet, but I haven't heard of any problems with them - which suggests they are reliable. I know we've had issues with A/C in a lot of the Mondeo's.

As Row said, test drive both and see which you prefer. Running costs and depreciation won't be noticably different I reckon.

As posted previously, go test drive the two of them. Test drive them thoroughly and not just 'around the block'. Decide for yourself - you're the one who'll have to drive it for the next few years so get the car that YOU like.

Personally I'd go for the C5. A much better looking car in my opinion. I find the seating very comfortable but I do know people that do not like the seating.

The 1.6HDI is very reliable but like most turbo diesels out there it does require correct servicing and most importantly, the correct specification oil. I'm sure the Mondeo will require this too.

Personally, I'd go with the C5, but only the one with the hydropneumatic suspension. It will probably cost a grand or two more, but well worth it in the longer term as the OP will keep the car for a long time - the end value is low so depreciation isn't that important

    Mondeo would be more reliable.

Where's your evidence of that? This forum seems to depend almost entirely on hearsay and pub talk when doling out advice. It's a bit annoying.

Im driving a 2006 Citroen C5 Series II for the past Two Years and havent had one bit of bother with it bar a pair of handbrake cables that I had to replace, theres 107 thousand kilometres on it now and it still feels as sound as the day i bought it,the Hydraulic suspension is a great job but will be hard found on the new model as it was a listed extra or only available on top spec im not sure, ive driven the standard 1.6 HDI new model C5 and found it to be a lovely motor car, looks great too, looks miles better than a Mondeo id reckon.

didnt realise this was for experts only. I thought for opinions. Personally im a fan of the french but from what ive heard ford is most reliable. Having driven both cars its a close call but I do think the ford is probably better made. Though I too would probably go for the C5 with hydraulic suspension. Pardon me for expressing my opinion.

I think on looks the c5 wins hands down I would go for that one also Citroën have come on in reliability so that should not be a problem and for comfort the c5 is the clear winner IMHO

The citroen 1.6 is 110 hp and 260 Nm the Ford 1.8 Zetec is 125 hp and 320 Nm. I recently changed a car back from 125 hp and 320 Nm to 106 hp 240 and found this drop in torque huge in terms of motorway driveability. Depends on your own preferances so a good test drive in both is advisable

Citroen are doing well, wonder why they don't make more of it? The C5 'unmistakably German', thankfully not when it comes to reliability.

Punto beats 3 series, Megane (old shape) beats Focus, wow.

So the criticism of recent French cars is unwarranted? Based on old reliability issues.

Whereas the public perception of the reliability of certain German marques (see the frenzied warnings against a Passat I was looking at in another thread) indicate that VW/Audi etc. are just trading on past glory...
