My uncle died 2 years ago and his wife has given me 2 pikes in which she has said was given to them from a wexford man in the early 60,s. Supposedly they are from the 1798 rising,They have new handles and the metal has been cleaned up,so i am wondering were i can go to get them authenticated,Thanks

What metal is it do you know? Normally these were made of iron and rusted to bits by now, and not something you can clean. Can you post a picture? I've seen original ones selling for 300+ Euro.

These turn up every now and again at auction. I'd love to own one but would have no idea on how to go about authenticating it. The only one I have seen up close is in the Pearse Museum (think there may also be one at Collins Barracks Military Museum too). IF Anyone has a granny about to chuck out a potatoe sack full of them pleeeeeeease give us a shout! They should definitely be preserved at all costs imo.

Thing is though how do you know it's correct ?

Ebay is full of pure fakes, I have also seen faked items/dubious items come up for auction so I am wondering how would you authenticate one of these ?

Well I wouldn't be 100% certain as it's not my area, if it was an Irish or Roman coin I'd know by having it in my hand. However to me the way the iron is rusted would seem consistent with it's supposed age, there was other photos of this I just upload one. It's rusted so much there's bits falling off, IMO not something you can fake so easily. Anyway that's what it sold for.
