I don't know if they would go that low but worth a shor. Maybe you could buy private

IMO it would be tough to get 4 grand off the asking price from a dealer.

Ya seen that one, would be a little worried handing over that amount of money for a private sale though.

Would 20k be more realistic for the two above?

I'll never understand people having no problem forking over a few grand more to a dealer instead of buying private.

Do people not realise the folks selling privately are just avoiding trading in to a garage? If you saw the same car in a dealers you might consider it! All because of a 3 month warreny!

Just get the VIN, do your checks (History, finance, mechanic) and everything should be good, and a few grand extra in your pocket.

Would you pay for one of those mechanical checks

Nope, I have heard the AA are very expensive.

I would pay my local competant mechanic to do it, should be maybe 50e.

If you have the car checked, know there is no finance on it, and the history is ok, whats the harm?

My problem with buying private is that most sellers see what the garages are charging and then price it slightly below.

You still have to get it serviced fully, valeted and potentially face big bills for hidden issues.

In the end you can end up more out of pocket then if you just went to a garage in the first place.

What's the max either of you pay for the two red TT's above?

TBH I wouldn't buy a red one as the colour would work against it come resale time.

However I think 20k is as much as I would go to for that reason

Does the red not age well?

You can buy one that has been serviced recently and wash it and hoover it yourself? Most people selling cars would have it in pretty good nick anyway.

In the case of the cars above the private one is 18k and the garage ones are at 22k. This is before haggling on either.

You would be surprised at the number of people that hate red cars.

You see the thing is you *should* have peace of mind with a dealer as you *should* be getting a car that is fresh, in good working order, serviced, vallet, etc. Dealers have overheads and prep to pay plus cover the cost of warranty and admin, etc., never mind trying to make a profit on each sale. It's fair to say that you should pay more from a *reputable* dealer for the same car for this peace of mind but these days I would trust no one and get a mechanic to check it out regardless. I couldn't see a dealer settling for less than €20k for either of these cars while if the private one checks out you could get it for €17-17.5k and a vallet will cost you 4100.

    FYP! :p

Also all of the cars mentioned will be due NCT at some stage this year so preferably pick a car that is due anytime this side of April and get them to put it through now. Further peace of mind!

You'd be very surprised how messy people's cars are and can be when you go to view.

As for servicing, If I spent 20k on a used car privately I'd be putting it straight into my mechanic for a full service and diagnostic. But as a rule now he runs a diagnostic on anything I'm interested in.

This is what I was trying to say OP.

Red isn't as well liked as people think. Just ask anyone who has had a red Merc how hard they can be to sell

    Cheers MCMLXXV,

If I got them down to 20k should I try for anything else extended warranty or getting it taxed for a bit?

    They will never tax it.

Do you mind me asking have you much experience of haggling hard??

It does help if your used to it and know how to play the dealer. Sadly its not a case of going in and saying thats what you'll pay.

No experience of haggling, I was thinking of playing the two dealers off each other as I like both cars and live near both dealerships.

    Have you any tips?

Should I start off at 19.5k or just tell them 20k is the max i'll pay and leave my mobile?

Playing them off against each other depends on many things and its most likely this being Ireland that they have some sort of working relationship which means dealer A will call dealer B to find out if your talking rubbish. It happened me before :o

Its more down to your skills as a haggler that will get you what you want. I've seen that and literally some guy wearing the salesman down over a couple of days/weeks with constant calls and call ins asking if he had changed his mind about the rice and decided to lower it yet.

That and literally walking in with the cheque already made out for the amount you want to spend and having a set of brass balls big enough to carry it off. I bought a car for less than half price doing that ;)

    I really couldn't say.

Its not as black and white as that. Its something I can only do when shopping on my own.

maybe some of the salespeople who frequent the place will tell you

OP - I think you are being silly refusung to look at a car privately.

Dealers know far better than your average Joe how to hide issues a car has from punters and are far less likely to be straight with you.

there is a 5k difference in the price of these two cars and the private one
, and thats before you haggle. the silver one also has full leather.

for 5k you could have a proper survey done by someone who knows what they are at, buy a decent warranty for it and walk away whistling.

    Thanks RobAMerc,

Would the AA or motorcheck full vehicle inspections be good enough?
I don't know any mechanics myself.

    http://www.aaireland.ie/AA/Vehicle-checks/Vehicle-Inspections.aspx

How would you go about buying a warrenty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,863 ✭✭✭RobAMerc

yes the AA one should be worth getting a quote on.
    there is also cartell.ie

with regard to a warranty - I'm not sure who does one but maybe ring a small dealer or two and they'll be able to put you in contact with someone who'll help.
A little leg work could save you the guts of 5k - at the very least deduct the 300 for the check aqnd whatever you pay for the warranty from the 18k asking, you'll still be better off.

Myself and family members have dealt with those two garages in the past, never had any problems with them but I'd doubt you will buy either car for €20k. I'd say you will be doing well to get either at around €21k/21.5k.

Who's to say you wouldn't get the private one for 15 k these days. Go meet the seller before you incur any expense. If you like what you see (both him and the car and his story), you can then start worrying about warranty finance checks etc etc

    Warranty company is Mapfre

There's no rule on haggling, it all depends on how desperate the seller is to complete a sale along with how many people have expressed a genuine interest in buying.

Start by ringing ALL the one's your interested in and suss them out. Even ring the one's your only slightly interested in because these might be of interest at the right price.

On the 08 i'd start by ringing and saying you nearly have an 07 bought but if the price was right you'd consider looking at the 08 at around 20 k and see what the reaction is.

For me this 08 asking 19950 for 37 days would be nice @16k ok miles are high but who will know only you. When it comes to resale you can sell cheaper too .

Ya seen that one suppose it would be due a timing belt change soon with the mileage.

I actually would be doing very few miles so could keep the mileage low.

16k would be good value for a 08.

Might send off an email so with an offer, would you be ok spending that sort of money on a private sale if it passed the aa checks, cartell?

Would a garage not offer them more than 16k?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,946 ✭✭✭Bigus

Email offers mean nothing and could be construed as insincere, don't insult them anonymously.

Ring and talk, better still meet and talk. This way an offer is not an insult but a logical reason why you'll pay X

Why would a garage pay 16k when a private seller is struggling @ 19 ? for over a month !

I know this takes time but look at the financial reward.
