Apparently over 60 people have fainted during public readings of this short story. It's called Guts and the guy who wrote it is the author of Fight Club and Choke.

Wikipedia sums it up best, "It is a tale of violent accidents involving masturbation."

Perfect After Hours reading material?

The people passed out during public readings of the story. I've never been to one but I imagine, with a skilled public speaker, it would be far more powerful and engaging than simply reading it off the Internet and probably explains why those 60+ people fainted.

More likely that, being Americans, they took the holding your breath part literally and passed out cos of that!

tl;dr? Guy plonks his butt on the suction valve on the bottom of the family swimming pool while having a crack, and it proceeds to suck his intestines, guts, heart and soul from out of his ass crack. Somewhere in this story he makes his sister pregnant, although it's not clear that the baby is his.

Family dog gets blamed for the whole thing, not sure if they actually had a dog though.

Not shocking, more squirmy (and spermy) for the male readers.
And as far as reading material goes, I can't recall coming across anything more sickening, maybe with the exception of a few passages from American Psyhco.

It's from the book Haunted, and it isn't the worst short story included. The most disgusting book I've ever read.

"Haunted" is OK, a bit of a let-down given the hype it garnered pre-release. Worth reading for some of the individual tales, I suppose. As a whole, it disappoints.

Getting weak at the insides just thinking about that Guts story now, though... bleugh, and I've just had black pudding
