Sorry I completely forgot about the target shooters. I'm a hunter myself and my brain is wired that way.

It is possible to get a licence for a .243 for target shooting as long you are a member of an authorized range.

But if you want a .243 for hunting you would need a deer licence.

If you want to use it to shoot deer, yes. Otherwise, if your super wants it, yes. Broadly speaking, it's going to be required, but not always.

Simple answer is NO you don't need a deer license but you do need "Good Reason", so it's up to you to convince the Super.
You can have a short barreled 308 woodland stalking rifle without the deer license if again you have good reason to own.

As Clive has said, you need good reason, if your super accepts that ''good reason'' is either target shooting or indeed fox control then you can have your 243.......................or whatever calibre for that matter once you have a legitimate reason for ownership.
You should never be required to prove 'need', you are required to provide reason.

just thinking out loud is all. im thinking for further down the line. at some stage i'd like to move up from the .22 i was thinking the 243 would make a good all rounder? at some point id like to apply for the deer licence, but would be nice to already own the caliber. idle thoughts of a novice shooter:rolleyes::rolleyes:

tis a good gun for both foxes and deer. makes bits of foxes. but its not the cheapest to run at 1.50 -2.00 a fox

Howya jay b, just wonder would you not be better get a smaller fullbore caliber round like a .223 for example before heading straight into the .243,
Just that its a big enough step jumping from a .22lr rimfire caliber to a .243 deer capable round. I'm just thinking of getting practice in and get more used to taking back drop, bullet drop - range etc..
Just my thinking for what its worth !!!!! Either way, best of luck to you with whatever you decide to do.:)
