Changing from 1.4-2.0, Extra Petrol Usage

OK at the moment I have a 1.4 Golf. I spend about €50 a week on petrol. Im getting rid of the Golf and thinking of getting a 2.0 Petrol Ford Mondeo (Zetec I think)

Now obviously it will cost me more in petrol but im wondering if it will be much more??

I use motorways most the time N3/M3/M5, and im not exactly heavy footed, usually stick to 100kph never much above,

Anyway just wanted some opinions as im going to look at this other car tomorrow

Also I was offered a 1.8 LX Mondeo, much difference here?

    Thanks

I dont know a whole lot about the mondeo but i had one for a couple of days as a replacement car and to say i hated it would be an understatement. It was completely dead when you put foot down(it was a 1.8l)Ive had a diesel for a few years and would never go back to a petrol.

I went from a 1.2 Punto (with a Citroen C5 Diesel in between) to an Alfa 1.6.

Mainly motorway driving, the alfa was pretty much the same , maybe 15% more on fuel consumption?

I'd a 1.4 Golf in the past and it was so heavy it was underpowered by the engine, it ate petrol, I reckon that you'd get about a 20 decrease in mpg at worst.

You're not going to be pushing the car to power like you would a 1.4 golf, so should see a better yield on mpg in comparison to the engine size.

That's just my experience driving different cars, others may/will be wiser :)

My dad went from a 1.6 Focus to a 2 litre Mondeo and does small mileage but he said the difference is tiny. His Focus was the ti-vct engine which is quite economical. The 1.4 Golf would be leas economical than that so the difference would probably be smaller. If he sticks to 100 kph in the Mondeo he can crack 40 mpg easily enough.

If you can buy it cheap it's not a bad choice at all.

Been offered a 1.8 petrol for 1500 and a 2.0 petrol zetec for 2500 both '01 with bout 6 months NCT and in around 100-110k miles, I'm thinkin d 1.8 for tax, petrol and cost but the 2.0 is in amazing condition

    I'm lost :(

the mondeo is a great car. The 1.8L would be fine in a car that size, are they 5 or 6 speed?

op take a read of the below. If the 1.8L is the 108 bhp version and the 2L is the 145 bhp one. I would definitely take the 2L. The increase in tax is a pittance and fuel would be nearly non existant.

regarding the fuel consumption, it all depends on how you drive. Vehicle weight is obviously also a big one. see below

It's not just the tax, it's tax, petrol and actual cost... €1k in the difference, though I'm sure I could get the 2.0 for €2/2200

if your looking at 2.0liter cars and are worried about mpg would you not be better off looking at a diesel?? im sure a 01-02 diesel mondeo could be got for around 2000..

1.4 golfs are hard on petrol anyway..

I've been looking at them all really but seem to be alot more petrol around and diesel seem to cost little more, but suppose it coul be worth the extra

i suppose you are not doing enough miles for a diesel but you wont really save anything by buying a 1.8-2.0 petrol.. personally i would rather the diesel.. try looking in the north.. the vrt wouldnt be much on a 01-02 and the cars would be better speced and better looked after than down here..
    http://www.autotrader.ie/search/Ford/Mondeo/2.0TD-LX/201103200938920/advert?channel=CARS vrt 400-500 quid at a guess
