I know there are no jobs out there anyway but I'm just talking about office/admin jobs in general and wondering if they are within reach for someone like myself, I am qualified in Microsoft Office 2007, but have not worked in an office before - I have had other jobd though - if I apply for some office job will they even consider me? Or will they want someone with years of office experience?

They will consider you. Every employer has slightly different needs and you can bet your left ass cheek there is at least one employer looking for someone like you.

Contrary to popular belief there are office jobs out there:

There's alot of competition though, so to be honest I wouldn't fancy your chances if you have no office experience.

That's what I was thinking,:( how about working as a temp though? Any info on that

There's lots of people looking for temp work I'm afraid, many of who have office experience! It might be worth being a bit creative on your CV...

Why are you not looking for work in the area where your experience is? You a tradey or somethin?

It's a numbers game. Make sure your cover letter, CV and interview skills are spot on. Apply for every office job you have a chance of getting. An employer will eventually give you a job.

As long as you don't give up you will find a job.

I didn't realise you could be qualified in MS Office... perhaps leave that phrase off your cv.

Your cv should show how the skills you used in your other jobs are relevant to office work. Getting the interview is half the battle.

You have zero chance of getting work as a temp. And a lot of "office jobs" are flooded with people on the Fas WPP. Your best bet is probably callcentre work.

    Why leave out the qualification?

    It shows motivation and knowledge.

    MOS http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/certification/mos.aspx
ECDL (to a point is and Office Accreditation)
Are both accreditations that many office workers have. Well worth putting them on a CV, but yes, the phrase used isnt the best.

There are a lot of short term office jobs out there. With your skills I'm confident you'll be able to find something. If you are stuck the WPP may be an option to get some experience on your c.v.

Just because you don't realise it doesn't mean something like that doesn't exist, so to offer the advise you have is a little silly.

I said to leave out the phrase "qualified in Microsoft office"
It's like saying you're qualified in using a telephone. It just sounds wrong.

MOS certified or ECDL certified would be better terms.

Ermm ...no offence ...but there is no such thing as an "office job".
It's a broad description ...you don't work outside or on a factory floor but in an office.

So what kind of job exactly are you looking for, OP?

    Good advice above.

I qualified as a legal secretary in April 2010 and they wouldnt even consider me with no experience. So applied for every admin job under the sun.

Managed to get 6 interviews, and 3 offers out of those interviews.

So even if you don't have the experience just apply for everything out there, be a little creative with your CV and seriously brush up and practice your interview skills.

    Good luck!

I think in this context meanings a job that involves filing, shredding, opening envelopes, perhaps some receptionist work and general office duties. That's what I understand as office work outside of skills and professions.

I've had an "office job" in one form or another for the last 20 years ...I'm yet to come across someone that fits the above job description.

"Receptionist" btw is a highly responsible position and not just handed out to anybody who knows what a phone or computer looks like ...or at least it should be.

Are you working at the minute? Is there any chance that you could assist in an administrative way? Ask, let them know your eager to learn more. All counts when it comes to updating a cv.

If you are job hunting, try retail, try the bookies, try the local newspaper, the the dole office (it's not like their workload hasn't increased!) They all entail admin duties. When applying for a job research the industry and tweak your CV to suit

    Best of luck :)

I'm talking about general admin! It might be for a solicitors office, an accountants office, a building site, a medium size store... either temp, part-time or full-time.

A quick scan of an Irish jobs site has the type of job I'm referring to: http://www.loadzajobs.ie/admin-jobs/office-administrator-junior-1629270.html

Responsibilities: Ringing clients to update information, other phone work; Some Reception, phone duties; Post; General office duties

    Just came across this thread...

I am desperately looking for any kind of admin / secretary / receptionist job, I am open to anything!

I have working in admin before while I was a student, for 3 summer periods, in a variety of admin roles in the public sector, and after college worked in an office based job for 3 years. I was not doing admin, but my job entailed dealing with clients, report writing, telephone conversations, typing, IT skills etc. I also have about 9 months experience after this in an admin type role, filing, paper work, etc.

I was in college for 4 years and have a specific qualification, construction based, and cant get a job in this AT ALL!

I am not getting any responses to any applications I am sending. I was unemployed for 6 months previous to getting the part time job I am in at the moment so I know how difficult it is to get anything.

I just wonder if my CV is not working or something?! I have a cover note that I tweed to specific jobs, and I have a long and short version of my CV, the shorter one pointing out all my admin experience.

Is there anything else I could be doing??

The problem is anyone that went to college would have the skills to do this job and their degrees might be an added bonus skill to use in the future.

You say you have IT skills. Is that working with a PC or fixing them?

Working with a PC, sorry wasnt that clear

I just hoped that someone would see that I do have potential, and have lots of transferable skills that I could bring to a business, just cant seem to get a reply, let along an interview!!

There is also the problem that they will think you are too qualified. They'll think that if a construction related job came along you'd be gone straight away.

I guess they may think this alright. There will NEVER be another job in my field (well at least 10 years I figure!) so really no fear of that happening. If I did get a job I would be in it for the long term for certain, just cant seem to get any interviews at all! Suppose just gotta keep applying, I know there are so many out there applying, there is prob a very high level of applicants, many of which may have more experience
