Bmw e39 problem

    Hi,

I have a 01 bmw 530 (diesel e39 body). A few weeks ago my abs warning lights came on. Got it checked out in a garage and all sensors were ok so they told me i had a fault with the abs unit itself. Checked this out online and seems to be a common enough problem. In the meantime my speedometer and fuel consumption gauge stopped working. Checked this out online and seemed to be a symptom of the abs unit fault. Found a crowd in the uk that recondition the units (as the price for a new one was a bit ridiculous.) Took unit out and sent it to the uk. The garage over there said that it was alright to drive without the unit installed, would have no abs or speedometer though.

Anyway, today as i was taking the car out of the drive it cut out. Warning came up on the dash saying fuel injection fault. Has anyone had a similar experience. Are the abs/injection faults linked?

    Cheers.

Before you splash out any money on a abs unit, get the battery checked/recharged, I've heard of faulty batteries showing up these errors.

edit : seems you sent off the part :(

Have you got the ABS unit back yet? It doesn't sound like you have.

    Probably a completely unrelated fault...

When is the last time you changed the fuel filter?

Battery is fine. Never had a problem with starting. Left lights on for hours and still starts on first turn.

Haven't got the part back yet. Got an email saying they received it today.

Keep the car serviced according to the display on the dash. Still have three bars left. Think it was about 6 months since last service and filters were replaced then.

Thanks for the comments. Any others would be appreciated.

Might help. Seems the 530d's suffer from injector and pre-delivery pump failures. I'm starting to be put off E39s tbh. The diesels aren't standing the test of time.

Just to keep you posted. Mechanic had a look at the car yesterday and reckons its the secondary pump. Not related to ABS problem. Does anyone know the name of a good place for used BMW parts. I remember a place off the nass road (was run by two Ukranian guys - just before the turn off for ballyfermot) that very good for BMW/Merc parts. Got a manifold off them before but never kept number?

Thank again for all the help.

PS: anyone want to buy a BMW 530, never a days trouble with it ;)

My e39 530d is happily tipping away having cleared 160,000 mile mark last week. only thing that needs doing is a track rod.

Out of curiousity how much was the abs unit new?

The injector fault would be indeed unrelated, just bad timing.

Strange that the ABS module caused the speedo not to work, ive never heard of that before, its usually a symptom of a faulty ABS sensor.

How did the garage diagnose the ABS module, did they pull any codes?

    Yea,

Code read that there was a problem with the left rear sensor. They swapped them around and also ran wires to test for sure and everything led back to the unit. Was driving for around 2 months with broken unit until the speedometer stopped working so knowing my luck these days there's probably a few sensors gone in the mean time. ( Although did google the problem and it does seem to be a symptom of the faulty abs unit)

The symptoms of abs module failure and speed sensor failing are the same - that's why it is confusing.

Although when the ABS light comes on (either permanently or intermittently) and the speedo is still working, it is usually the ABS unit. When the ABS light comes on and the speedo stops working at the same time (both permanently) then it is usually the wheel speed sensor

(Done a bit of research myself into this - I was lucky that in my case it was the speed sensor. The left rear one BTW)

So i got a call today from the company who recondition the abs unit. They recon theres nothing wrong with the unit, they can't find any fault. They told me to check out with the garage what exact fault code was coming up. Rang the garage they could not recall the exact code but that the driver rear wheel showed an open circuit. They checked the resistance and all sensors showing same resistance. Also said something about hooking up an oscillator and it showed a steady waveform. So i'm back to square one and €75 out of pocket so far.

Nasty. Did the mechanics actually put in a new sensor or just swap around the two rear ones? I did all this myself but with a brand new one and I successfully diagnosed the faulty sensor.

I don't think the two rear sensors are identical parts, or are they?

On E38s they are, the rear right controls cruise control and allowed me to rule out dodgy rear ones, my bad one was the front left wheel.
