Battery dead and Wont charge

I own a Dell XPS M1210 and for the 3 years Ive owned it I've never had any major problems with it. However just before Christmas my charger icon started to say "Plugged in not charging" and sometimes just not noticing the charger was plugged in. I put this down to it being old as a lot of the wires were exposed after 3 years of ware and tear and so I bought a new one. This worked fine for about 1 day, after that my laptop started being quite delicate at the slightest touch when it was charging it would stop and I'd have to jiggle with the charger to get it to connect again. I put up with this because I only used it on charge very often. However now my battery is completly dead and when I plug in the charger it won't make the connection. Any help anyone can give me would be great as I have an exam I need to study for on Monday.

Can that be fixed easily/cheaply?? I've sent it of to a company who fix my dad's computers for now, hopefully they can do something w/ it.

Got it back today from the repair guys. Aparently the on/off button is integrated into the motherboard and its gone. Don't actually see how that would cause the problem but still. Also the orange battery dead light came on when I pressed the on button, shouldnt that mean it the button was fine??
