Is this an automatic air valve?

Not sure what this valve is - on the Ma's system which is fairly modern closed with three zones (up,down, water).

There are bleed valves on the tops of the rads so what's the purpose of these. They're on every rad.

My house has much older, open system and no such valves.

no they are drain valves so that you can isolate each radiator and drain it without drainiing the entire system.
