2002 Renault Laguna 1.9 AUTHENTIQUE DCI

Was going to buy the Mrs one of these with 120,000 on the clock. They look well and are fairly cheap to buy.

    Are they any good?

    Paul.

I came close to buying one of these a few years ago. Laden with equipment, dead cheap on the used market, look great and lovely to drive until....I asked two taxi drivers, both of which owned their lagunas for more than a year and told me they were the worst cars they'd ever had. One reckoned he was spending about 300 a month on repairs - sensors, electric windows, wishbones, etc - all the usual renault suspects. One said it had cost him €600 to get a boot release motor fixed.

My uncle also has a 2003 one which at 80,000 miles and loads of repairs in the 4 years he had it decided one day to go into limp home mode. After various mechanics refused to look at it he brought it to the local Renault dealer who told him they would get a new ECU for it at a cost of €800 which may or may not fix the problem but wud need to be paid for either way. Needless to say he's not throwing any more money at it.

My own mechanic also used much choice language at me at the suggestion of buying one. He had a story about a guy who recently asked his advice on buying one. Mechanic's response - you'll need window regulators and they're €400 each. The guy reckoned it was worth the gamble cos it was low mileage, dealer serviced and bought the car for €1600. 3 weeks later he was in getting two new window regulators fitted. €800 down the pan. He sold it soon after...

Lots of horror stories on the net, seemingly very random build quality, pity, they're a good looking car and nice to drive.

Yes, it has 6 months on the NCT.

I have heard that the electronics are a disaster. But the Mrs will only be doing 10,000 a year. Hard to know if I should chance it.

If she is only doing 10k miles a year why contemplate buying a diesel? Just more technology to go wrong. Also Lagunas of that era are hit and miss when it comes to reliablity. Personally myself I would not take the chance on one.

8 year old Laguna... it would have to be free, with a full tank of fuel to be attractive to me.

I'd play safe and get her a Corolla of similar vintage.

Dont buy this car whatever you do. They are one of the worst cars ever built.

They are indeed the worst car ever built. Cue the onslaught of Renault huggers.....

There is a reason they are so cheap. Any Renault after about 01/02(when all the models changed) are to be avoided like the plague, they are shocking bad.

I've just changed a clutch and flywheel on a 1.9dci laguna, Not much change from 2k....

As has been said, if your wife will only be doing fairy small milage, there is no fuel cost advantage to getting a diesel.
