Recently returned emigrant who is considering using my sisters car whilst she's in Australia. Ill be in ireland for 6 months. It's a 99 Opel corsa and to be honest worth nothin. I spoke to the insurance co. & they said I would have to be the registered owner in order for them to be able to insure me. No problem, I can send in the log book to change that. The tax is up but i can renew that for 3 month intervals. No problem. The car doesn't have a current NCT, she told me it failed over a rattling exhaust issue b4 she went to Oz, around 2 years ago. What's the story w/ the NCT? I assume it's required? How long does one have to get it? What do people do if the cost of getting it to pass is worth more than the car? get another car? Will my insurance be invalid if I'm driving around without it? Some general info on the ins & outs of this NCT thing would be appreciated.

    Chao.

First thing you should do is call NCT and arrange and appointment to start the ball rolling, you could be waiting a couple of weeks for an appointment. Get the car tested and see what the results bring. If it fails, bring it to a few independent garages and get a feel as to how much repairs are gonna cost ya and take it from there.

If you're stopped without an NCT you can risk getting 5 penalty points and a €2000 fine.

Not too sure about you're insurance company, some vary, you'll need to talk to them about it.

    Hope this helps in someway
