    Hello!

I am a solitary runner....I train for 10k, half marathon's, do the odd painful 5k....am lacking motivation since winter and looking to maybe bring some fun and socialising into my running! But Motivation would be the main thing....a meet and jog, meet and run, meet and sit ups...charge down a slippery hill through the woods....I love running down Bray Head......I believe Sugar loaf is even better.....anyway.....running alone is getting as boring as my unchanged tunes on ipod........anyone around to maybe start a running group near Balbriggan to run on beaches, roads and country hilly lanes on Saturday afternoons..........? :)

I'm a runner from Balbriggan myself. I meet a lot of runners like yourself, out training alone, during my evening training runs. I'd just like to make everybody aware, who may find training alone a little boring, that there is an athletic club in Skerries (Skerries ac), of which I am a member myself. We meet 3 times a week for group sessions. Sunday probably being the most social, where young and old meet in the beautiful Ardgillan Park for a steady run up and down the hills, from the car park at 10.20am. all standards of course are welcome!

Do you have contact details for the club in Skerries?

I don't have a contact to hand right now. I am meeting with the club in Ardgillan tomorrow at 10.20 for a run from the car park. Up to now the club caters mainly for juvenile members with a small number of registered senior athletes. We would all train together on the designated training times. I suspect if the adult turnout were to increase, adults and juveniles would have their sessions seperatley. If anybody is considering in meeting for a run with the club in the morning, make yourself known in the car park at about 10.20.

Could you tell me what level of fitness there is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 sahs1

Hi all!! I guess its hard to make the transition from loner runner to joining a group!!?? I will say where I run is rural, hilly, with many different routes and distances to choose from..............I can also say that I have never met another runner..........ever!!! lol Meet loads of cyclists though.......! They seem to love punishing themselves on the hills.........

So my fear of not being fit enough or able to chat and run at the same time, (or want to!!!) hopefully is ill founded........did 9.8k on Sat (first long since way way before xmas...so well chuft)........so will be brave and meet up with one of your suggestions next sat afternoon...........:) Hopefully then I can intro some of you to my route's here! :)

Happy Running.......and hope the week goes fast and well!!

This morning, we had 2 guest runners training with the club for the 1st time. One guy was was as good as anyone in the group...while the other guy was a 1st timer. Both enjoyed their training run! So the level of fitness is irrelevant !!

Well got myself down to Ardgillen (heysi) on Saturday afternoon......god that hill is a complete killer...next time I plan to follow the cycle track....! Also found a gem of a running place in Donore County Louth, the Battle of the Boyne...just gorgeous and you can go abit off road scuttling up and down banks...enjoying the fast flowing river Boyne to the right and the canal to your left....paths are great...just stunning location! Planning a run there on Saturday!!! And toast of the day the sports shop in Drogheda above Heaton's have a fantastic sale on....brilliant prices......!! :)) Not getting enough runs in still but least its a start....up to 9k though! :)....slow!;)

Try a local fit4life. Most have a great range in abilities so it can ease you in gently.

Hi Rom thank you so much for your prompt reply. Tried that unfortnatlu there is no local group. The closest running club or similar is in Drogheda as far as i can see...I am wondering would it be hard/worth it /much effort to create a local group....

Hi sorry i suppose location might help...I live in Balbriggan. There is a group that meets Saturday mornings at Gormanston beach but my son has matches. I am looking for evening get togethers. Or even an idea how to maybe organise and create a group myself if there is no health/insurance issues

I'm originally from Balbriggan myself. Often thought about setting up a running club there but drifted out of running and into cycling.

I think your options are star of the sea ac, skerries ac or fingal tri really.

I know this guy is involved with fingal tri and does group runs in swords but there is a cost.

I'm pretty sure Bernie McNally, of swords cycling club does beginner runs in Lusk too but i cant locate the page at present

    Edit:

    See here

Hi thanks so much for your detailed help. I am definatly looking into those. I know Dinny in Swords. He is great i used to do Kettlebell classes with him but i am actually looking for something close by convenient so that i have no excuses...I might use and abuse Facebook to see if there is any interest coz i just found this on the athletics ireland website..

    ***********
    Starting a Club

Athletics Ireland can provide all the support and expertise needed to form a new athletics club.
    Our Development Team offers:
    • Guidance and support from the local RDO (Regional Development Officer)
    • Three free places on Athletics Leader or Assistant Coach course
    • On completion of Athletics Leader course by three people, a bag of Little Athletics equipment
How To Set Up A New Athletics Club

A new club needs 10 members, four of whom must be over 21.
A new club must elect a chairman, secretary, children’s officer, registrar and treasurer.
A new club must submit an application to their county board to receive clearance to form the new club.
A new club’s application should contain a copy of the club constitution (link here to club constitution & committee structures document document)
The county board informs Athletics Ireland in writing that the club application has been approved.
A new club then applies to Athletics Ireland to become a member.
A new club’s registration charge with Athletics Ireland is €150 per annum.
The cost of registering a member is €17 for adults and €12 for under-18s.
Athletics Ireland will forward a password to the club secretary to allow the new club register members online.
