Hey. Whats the consensus on colors to paint a small house? I had like a different color in mind for each room, but I think for a small house it might be a bit too much.

At the moment, its all painted white undercoat. Is the best color to paint a house white or magnolia? Thanks

I wouldnt go for magnolia, or even white for that matter. But something in between. An off white/creamy colour. There are lots of different shades of cream. Some have yellow undertones while others have blue undertones. Best to go for one with a yellow undertone as it will appear to be a 'warmer' colour, especially on dull days - like we get a lot here in Ireland!

If you dont have your heart set on a particular colour for any of your rooms then its probably best to go with one neutral colour such as cream/ivory throughout the whole house initially. Having the same colour running through will make the house feel bigger as one room will flow through to the next. You can then go ahead and add colour with thinks like furniture, cushions, curtains, paintings, lamps etc. These are easily changed if you get sick of a particular colour.

The longer you live in the house the better feel you'll get for the place and can then maybe start to use different paint colours on some of the bedroom walls or create a feature wall or two in the sitting room etc.

Magnolia is common,as in allmost all renovated houses or new builds that are put up for sale or for rent are painted in it.

Try to use 2 different colours on the walls,as this will gave a small room a sense of depth and space too.

Builder painted my new house in magnolia,me and my girlfrioend soon changed all that and went with different colours.

Eggshells on the skirting and door frames, oak doors and flooring and light and dark biscuit style colours on the walls.

Living room was painted with 2 different colours and it turned out very well.

Cheers for that advice eyefordetail. Sounds like good advice, I'll stay away from magnolia exactly. Im kinda thinking of a matt paint in a lightish yellow or something. As you say, for the plenty of dull Irish days. Ill have a look for something in that color, did you have any specific color names.

Paddy, was your house a big house? As in new build or somthing. My house is an old town house, so its fairly small, Id be kindof worried about too many colors being too busy or the like.

It was a small to medium semi detached house, its alot bigger now though.;)

I picked out 2 colours,1 was a lightish colour and the other was a darker colour, and I simpley painted oposing walls in the living room and 1 of the bedrooms in these colours and the transformation was lovely.Still bright but warm too and also my own stamp on it.

Steer clear of magnolia, its a builders favourite colour with regards new builds and renovated houses. Its classed as a "standard" look or "rented" look of colour nowadays.

But everyone is different and has different tastes,so each to their own and whatever you like,is whats best.

Hiya - have a look at the farrow & ball range. We have done our whole house in Pointing - it is less yellow and paler in real life iykwim. We went to a colourtrend place and they made up the colour to match, cost a lot less than F&B. We have a feature wall in our kitchen in a mushroom kind of colour. You can buy pots to try at home - one tip is to paint some a4 pages with the paint and using masking tape put them up on different walls - that way you can easily see what each colour is and how the different light is in each room at different times of the day.

    best of luck
