I do acknowledge that there are many quality people to choose from from among the ranks of Labour and Fine Gael when considering who should be in the next cabinet ...... Michael Noonan, Eamon Gilmore, Pat Rabitte, Richard Bruton etc... but for me the people that stand out are the independents like Shane Ross and Peter Somerville.
I do hope that when Enda and Eamon sit down to decide who should form the cabinet that they forget party allegiances and appoint these men to cabinet for the good of Ireland.

Ml Noonan showed great qualities as Health Minister during the Hep C Scandal. They even made a TV series of it!

No chance. Think of all the FG and Labour hacks who stuck it out during the 14 lean years - they'll all want plum jobs.

And you presumably admire Shane Ross because of his anti-cronyism speech on the Brendan O'Connor show - you are aware that his wife is Ruth Buchanan of RTE, and that BOC is his colleague at the Sindo - but of course those connections had no involvement in him getting a fawning interview from Brendan O'Connor on RTE.

Which is exactly the reason George Lee got sidelined after he was elected. He was very naive to think he could just walk into a frontbench job though.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

I think Taoisigh appoint their most able TD's/Senators to government. Sometimes a Taoiseach mightn't get on well with a TD so that TD might suffer on the backbenches for longer than their ability will bear, such is life.

We don't know who will be elected to the next Dail/Seanad. I would hope that the next Taoiseach would appoint the most able to their govt.

Little thing like policy does also come into play in these considerations.;)

It can't be said often enough. This ex-Minister followed a dying woman onto the steps of the high courts. Is this the working of a high calibre politician, Yes or No?

    Nail on head.

When it comes down to it, these guys are all the same. They are loyal to the party even if its to the detriment of the country. I won't go into a spiel about how the entire political system needs to be changed. But the fact of the matter is we are limited to the talent of the people who get elected. For every Martin Cullen we have about 5 senior civil servants who propped him up, told him what colour shirt to wear never mind wrote his speeches. The talent pool is limited full stop.

The best example of what I personally find flawed about this political system is that in my own constituency opposition candidates are brainless. This is the reality. I do not want to vote FF but the guy is head and shoulders above the rest.
Now by voting FF in my own constituency that is in theory my wish for a FF government really (which is the least desirable result for me). So in order to do my part in ousting them I have to vote for a worse gombeen politician.

People may say "get off your ass and run yourself if you don't like whats on offer". So then I am forced into joining a party where I will become institutionalised in the party politics bullsh*t. I cannot rock the boat or id be an outcast. I cannot be an independent because in this system you need to be aligned to a party, you need to kiss ass for 10-15 years to get anywhere.

Say theres a really talented FG candidate running but I do not fancy Enda Kenny as a Taoiseach, is there not a damned if I do, damned if I don't element to that?

Personally i'd like to be able to vote for my leader. Let a lesser house take care of smaller issues be it councillors or whatever. Let an elected leader appoint professionals in their field. Its the US system in essence but surely there can be some kind of hybrid system. I'd be alot more confident in the political system if we had actual ministers who were experts and professional in their own area, be it justice, health or foreign affairs. Back them up with a competent administration which wouldn't cost as much because our ministers would actually be running the show. not being spoon fed and told what to say 24/7 by some civil servant behind the scenes.

unlikely since taoisigh have generally appointed politicans to cabinet - generally unsuited and unqualified in their portfolio

Time will tell, but it won't be too hard to improve on the FF, Green / Hearney shambles that clearly couldn't even appoint competent ( and there were many) advisors to show them what to do.

Tell that to Bridget McCole's family.
