    Another medical balls up.

Oh balls. That's a kick in the pants.
From that pic it looks like he has also been beheaded and they've rested it on a few old cloths...

Why does his head look like a testicle with a badly photoshopped face on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 378 ✭✭hogflem

It would be interesting to know what price tag a judge would put on a wrongfully removed bollock.

'Doctors treat every lump within the body of the testis as cancer until proven otherwise and speed is of the essence in treating testicular cancer.'

Yet another sensationalist bullsh*t story from the rag of rags, the Daily Fail. The guy is very lucky it wasn't cancer, and besides there is no way to tell before removing it anyway. I don't see what he's so upset about to be honest, he still has one left, and if he wanted he could have a prostheses inserted.

While yes he is lucky, the rest of your comment is most definitely NOT true. Doctors CAN tell.

A close family member found a lump, went to the doctor, got refered to the hosipital had an ultra sound, and it was found to be a cyst (thankfully).

My housemate also found a lump went to the doctor, and it was decided it was not tumor (cant remember if he had to get an ultra sound).

Comments like that will only make people more apprehensive about getting a lump checked by their GP. Do you think/ check info before commenting or just type the first thing that comes to mind??

If any guys out there ever find a lump go straight to your GP.

And in reference to you not seeing what he's so upset about I can only assume you are female.

...not with this type of cyst. The point was that the US was done and it appeared to be cancer. There is a 1 or 2% chance that it was a very rare type of cyst (not the type of cyst your family member had). Unfortunately the only wat to know is to biopsy (which would seriously risk spreading cancer, if that is what it was) or removal of the lump. They removed it.

There appears to have been a major error of communication in this case, but on the face of it, medically, the right thing was done.

You shouldnt criticise others when you get it wwrong yourself.....;)

    "They didn't apologise ..., claims angry 18-year-old"

Should they apologise for the result being negative? Should they apologise for taking it out? Every solid painless testicular lump is removed, as the risk of cancer is so high that a biopsy is unjustified, its risky in itself, and if you miss the tumor and get a negative, you can end up clearing someone who still has cancer. He was, as they said, in a very small minority who get the all clear.

Fair enough, getting the all clear when you think you've cancer probably should be done in clinic, not by post, but i dont think that smallish point justifies a cause celebre article.

As for the "Knock in self-esteem" - If he dealt with it in a private matter, i don't think you'd have the nagging feeling people knew you were one short. However, if you go to the redtops with your human-intrest story + photo in your favourite scarf, people down the town are gonna find out!

When the man on the street's negative biopsy result (of testicular cancer, which has a 95% + cure rate anyway) makes the paper, you know its been a slow week.

And just to go back to a few previous posts, this guy had a painless solid lump no doubt. Fluid filled / painfull lumps are a different kettle of fish. A GP +/- an ultrasound can tell you if its fluid filled, but cannot diferentiate between different solid types (the majority of which are tumors, as stated). So if one of your mates went to his gp and got the all clear, etc, it was not the same thing. Obviously this is not something that would have been done without a full exam and imaging.

What's the big deal? He has one left!

Besides, Hitler and Des Bishop are one-ballers ... if its good enough for them its good enough for this lad.

My bollix is that chap 18! The only way to know 100% if its cancer is to do a biopsy after removal, so it's just tough.
He should be glad he's still alive and fit to ride!:)

having a ball whipped out for mistakenly identified cancer > not having a ball whipped out for non identified cancer

if you remove the ability for the medical profession to make mistakes you may as well just shut down hospitals

    Well...

A: As you may or may not have guessed from my username I am male.

B: Ultrasound is almost always performed on testicular lumps. There are many different kinds of lumps, it just so happens that the type of cyst he had looks very similar to a malignancy on examination and ultrasound.

C: Yes I did type the first thing that came to mind, but because I'm a medical student and have recieved some education on this subject, the first thing that came to mind was correct, as drkpower pointed out.

Anyway, I see you have already apologised, apology accepted. The reason my first post on this thread was so scathing was my annoyance at the fact that the Daily Fail have, once again, tried to create controversy where there is none, and to create the impression that mistakes were made by doctors, when in fact they did everything right.

This is nothing new, recently they ran a smear story about the efficacy of the H1N1 vaccine because a terminally ill woman had died after recieving it, shock horror. Stories such as these are the epitomy of reckless journalsim and serve to create a distrust of the medical profession amongst the public, which is beneficial to no one.
