Employee discount

Would really appreciate any response to this. Years ago I worked for a large retail chain part time. There was an employee discount though it was never strictly monitored. At one stage we were all given two cards one for us and another. These quickly expired and new joiners never received any so never v strict. Basically I used my discount to buy stuff for my friends which at the time although it may sound daft now I didn't think was wrong. I didn't make a profit on it or anything like that.

I had reason to think back to on this recently when someone offered me their discount. Now I think it's very wrong though first time I really thought it through. I feel very guilty and want to send them money but my question is if I do it anon is it too cowardly as there is always the chance they could press charges.

Is it too cowardly? 1 vote

Give the money to me and I will pass it on on your behalf

managers can give staff discount places anyway usually, i've gotten a lot of 10-30% offs and wouldn't think twice about it.

I don't think that what you did was very wrong, even including discounts the business will not have being selling the goods at less than cost.

But, if you believe that you did wrong, and your want to make amends, give the money to a charity.

Giving it back to the company will just be a pain in the ass for the company accountant and they will not appreciate it.

Yea, don't bother, the retail chain already make a profit even on discounted items and are well aware that discounts are passed on to friends and family etc,

However where i feel you would be acting unethically is if you used the card to buy produce at a discounted rate and then sell for full price or near full price outside the store.

Just forget about it.Discounts are there to be used.We get a certain amount of discount per year,a certain % products off until we have spent €2000.

The company would rather money being spent in our shop then somewhere else basically

I never really thought about it like that - I see your point but you could just think of it as: you were buying your friend a gift with YOUR discount (which is allowed) and they offered you a bit of cash as a thank you :P

Plus I think companies don't really mind as they know people are going to do things like this with their friends. I'd imagine they wouldn't be too mad because most people wouldn't ever realise it was wrong.
As long as people didn't over use the discount on their friends I'd say it's ok-ish. :)

No need to beat yourself up over it!

Sure depending on the retailer the management will discount products so that customers will buy them. If they can do it for them shouldn't you be entitled to something for putting it on display in the first place?

Jesus christ this is such a non issue. I'd hate to see how you'd handle a real problem, like burnt toast or something.

seriously??? i wouldn't worry about it!

i still always get employee discount in my previous employers places, in fact a place where i haven't worked in since i was 18, still gives me free drinks when im there for an event. i'd feel it was an insult to the manager to refuse his offer...

while I was working I got everyone stuff on staff discount. When I left they never took the discount card back. It says it doesn't expire until 2013 but I'm afraid to use it...

If I could get a staff discount off friends everytime I spent money in a shop I would take it.

Some companies view this as fraud and have fired people over it. However, you said yourself your company didn't care, weren't strict about it- and you no longer work there. Very much a non-issue. I'd forget about it if I were you!

No disrespect as you are trying to do a good deed, but if you send money back you're a fool.

If you want your conscience to be at ease. I've had alot of retail jobs. Loads of people used their employee discount for friends. Its what people do.

Sad fact is if you sent the money in anonymously it would just end up in the pocket of someone else.
