Apparently the Celtic Cup in Cardiff is on a little earlier than usual than this year.

So how will athletes be chosen for this? A lot of athletes haven't even competed yet. Will the AAI Games this weekend act as a time trail for the Celtic Cup?

Only carded athletes are being selected. Apparently an athlete who finished third in the juniors last week has been selected while the athlete who won hasn't because he isn't carded.

Ah I see. My coach was keen on me to do it and try push for the Celtic Cup but I'm not carded. Thanks for that, you saved me a trip down to that kip Nenagh.

Can you not contact the AAI and ask them what they are basing their picks on?

They're a pretty useless crowd when it comes to answering email replies but I give it a try for the sake of it.

I can see the pros and cons of this.

The pros is only a certain level of athlete (dependent on age) will get a vest, brings back some element of prestige (it can be easy enough to get a vest).

The cons are those just outside carding standards can benefit from these comps and it can bring them onto the next level.

With it being so early that is probably the best way to do it, maybe for juniors they should've had the Juniors in Nenagh as the trial ...

yeah...having the team picked before the national juniors can through up some surprises.
I see on the Doneen site, they have an u17 who has been picked for the u20 team, but she was below par on Sat and finished outside the medals.

Also, (not talking about HJ here, just in general) just cos someone is carded doesn't mean they are the best u20. You might be carded u17/u18 and the only carded athlete for that event, but someone older but short of carding standard for their age might be better.
In my opinion its strange only picking carded athletes, not sure if thats new or not.....actually it must be new, there was non carded athletes last year....cutbacks?

Also...why no public annoucement of the team and the u16 schools team which will be competing on the day also?

Have they announced the team anywhere?
