Abolish libel laws

Libel laws should be abolished, if you accuse a politician of being corrupt this person can sue you for libel and get you to pay damages.

Libel laws in this country are detrimental for our freedom of speech.
Anyone who supports the current libel laws should be considered to be against the freedom of speech.

Are you for real? What if someone started a rumour about one of your parents touching kids or something like that? Do you not think they should be punished? Or is it ok for someones rep to be destroyed just cause YOU think it is?

Disagree. What if someone wrongly called you a pedophile? I'm sure you'd like some recourse instead of seeing your face on the front page of every paper and not being able to do anything about it.

Okay, bad start to your thread. We don't have libel laws anymore. There is no Libel Act. It was replaced in 2009 by the Defamation Act. The tort of Libel and Slander were thrown in the bin and a new Defamation Tort now exists.

Just the principle behind the freedom of speech and not letting politicians and rich assholes hide behind these kind of laws.

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

    Recognise this?

You can say what you want as long as you can prove it.

I agree that in Ireland our defamation laws seem to be too strict, but if we had none then how would anyone know what to believe. There would be so much disinformation.

There is so much disinformation out there on the Internet. In fact we should ban the Internet!

No it isn't. I would never engage in trolling. All these opinions I state on this site are my legitimate opinions about things.

How are we compared to the UK where people can be bankrupted by claims of libel even with nothing to back it up?

Freedom of speech is there to entitle people to have their opinion and to be able to state and ask questions about any facts they want to.

It does not entitle you to make crap up.

Freedom of speech does not protect you from telling lies.

I don't see the problem. If you have something to say about a politician or a rich asshole, say it. It is only slander if you're full of sh1t and can't back it up.

    What a load of crap.
So you support freedom of speech to the point that ANYONE can say ANYTHING about ANYONE and make ANY ACCUSATIONS they like.

Sorry, but being someone subjected to unfair, unjust and downright untrue criticism and accusations of someone in the past I can not agree.

What you are saying about politicians, this law applies to EVERYONE!

What an idiotic thing to say.

People have freedom of speech, they can say ANYTHING they like if they can back it up. If you can't back it up, you can not say it.
i.e. if you have proof someone is corrupt you are free to say it. If you have no proof stfu!

No. It's only fair that "freedom of speech" allows people the protection from malicious and unfounded rumour mongering

In dictatorships politicians shoot people who say things they don't like, in Ireland the politicians sue them instead.

Ireland is truly a banana republic.

If we did as you want saying "WhiteOnion makes valid points" could get me sued so no

Ireland is truly a banana republic.

In order to get compensation they need to prove 2 things:
    1. That the accusation is false.
    2. That the person has undergone some sort of hardship, public opinion or otherwise, as a result.

It's actually not a case that you have to back it up, the person suing is the one who has to prove you've made **** up.

So op, you're all for unlawful accusations..
what say i doctored a few photos of you fiddling with kids, post them around your neighbourhood and put your photo in the newspaper as a known offender.
Do you think it's fair that i could do all of this, effectively destroying your life, without there being anything you can do to legally stop me? freedom of speech and all that....
