    Hi,

I'm hoping to go travelling around the world in August. I was wondering how do you sort out visas in places like Asia, Australia and Russia. That is most of the places I have on my agenda as of now but plans could change.

I'm afraid if I go off on my travels and don't sort out visas before I leave I might be an outlaw in a foreign country...that would NOT be fun!!!!

    Any advice would be great!

You read the regulations for the country that you want to visit.

In general, you won't become an outlaw. They simply won't allow you enter the likes of Russia if you haven't sorted the visa in advance so the airline will not allow you board a plane going there.

You should start applying for your visas soon. Most countries require lots of paperwork to be filled in and provide poor and often contradictory information on their embassy websites. You will find yourself making many trips to embassies to apply, submit additional documentation and finally pick up your visa. Each embassy will require you to leave your passport with them for some time, making it impossible to apply for several visas concurrently.

When applying for visas last year, I found the Chinese embassy to be particularly well organized and easy to deal with. The Russian embassy was much more difficult and most people ended up having to supply additional documents. Also, the forms offered for download on the embassy website are outdated. You have to go through an online application process before going the embassy. You will also need to acquire a travel voucher and a travel insurance approved by the embassy. There is a travel agency in Talbot St that can sort you out with these - or you can use one of the online services that take care of the paperwork for you.
