Cold bridges in action!

    Hi,

A photo here would illustrate this alot better but I don't have 1 to hand right now.

I thought people might appreciate this. We read alot about cold bridges and condensation, but it's all very theoretical for us lay people.

I saw a great example of one however over Christmas.

A familly member has a traditional build TF with reasonable efforts made to airtighten it. HRV, good insulation etc.

While visiting at christmas he pointed this situation out to me.

They have a very large window which is 2 storeys and divided into multiple sections. The window is basically alot of smaller windows linked together in a supporting frame that was installed in advance of the windows themselves. I've seen it before so it seems common enough. Once finished the supporting frame was clad with the same pvc finish inside and out and now the unit looks tied together.

The frame however is a very obvious cold bridge.

The day I was there each point where there was supporting frame was covered in condensation, the rest of the window being bone dry. Literally every 2 foot, there was a vertical line of condensation an inch wide and the full height of the room.

They have mdf painted cills. As a consequence of the condensation, after less than a year there are semi circular sections around the based of each of the cold bridge elements on the cill where the cill has expanded upwards due to the dampness.

I thought it was a brillant illustrative example of cold bridging. No camera with me that day though.

Just consider the damage that could be caused if that condensation was hidden behind a finish.
