Driving Slowly

Hi guys, I hope this isn't a silly question :o

There is one thing that has been niggling at me since I started learning to drive. I always seem to have trouble with driving in very slow, technical places, for example in a busy carpark or garage. I've always been taught that driving along in first is a no-no, but I'm afraid of stalling if I keep driving so slowly in second. How do I do this without coasting or stalling? Appreciate any advice, I've my test in three weeks and absolutely bricking it.

The gears are there to be used, if you're going slow enough than first gear is just fine to use. In the example you used, manoeuvring in a car park, first gear is ideal. Don't be afraid to use first if you have to. Obviously this doesn't mean you can go screaming around in first!

You should hear\feel the engine losing power and change gear accordingly.

If it's chugging along in second then I'd go down to first and then build up power (when\if you can). No point cutting out just because you think you should move along in second.

Hopefully someone will correct this for me as I'm not 100% on that!

This is correct. A slight refinement would be that you should change down before the engine chugs, a part of slowing down for what is ahead.

Another point I would add is; it is acceptable to 'coast' at very slow speeds, but it then becomes 'clutch control', as you would moving in or out of a parking space or doing a turnabout.

Low speed low gear, Higher speed, higher gear
Ist gear is fine in confined spaces as you should be going at a very slow speed. When you are in busy stop start traffic you will be in first gear.

Best of luck in the test
