Im gonna get slaughtered for this one.......go easy on me folks ok.

My mate is getting married in febuary and Im embarressed to admit that its my first wedding. I've been actively avoiding them for years(even managed to dodge my own sisters wedding)but he's a good friend and I think its time I took the plunge. Anyway, weddings arent the only thing Ive been avoiding, I hate all things formal, weddings, funerals, graduations, the works. So Im also embarresed to admit that I dont own a suit. I actually have no idea about going about getting one either. I went onto louis copelands website and they started at 400quid, that kind of scared me to be honest. I had no idea suits were so expensive. Rental is another option I suppose, but I dont want to turn up at the wedding looking like a cheapskate either.
Is there a middle ground in terms of price? I mean is there a place I could get a decent suit for less than 400quid? And what type of suit am I looking for, are there suits made especially for weddings? Or do I get a generic suit? When you buy a suit do they come with shoes, shirt and tie or do you have to buy those things seperately. I have to admit, to my further embarresment, I dont own a pair of shoes.
    Cheers

Shirts, ties and shoes don't come with a suit, you'll have to buy each separately. Try this place, they're over in Ballymount (just off the M50), and you can pick up a decent suit, shirt and tie for about €220-250. They're very helpful and will give you plenty of advice as to what sort of suit is appropriate for the occasion.

Brilliant, thanks Zaph. I actually live just 5 mins away from that place. Perfect.

I suggest that if you are looking for a cheapish all purpose suit that can be worn for funerals, weddings, job interviews, etc, that you don't go for black. This is for two reasons. The first is that when it comes to suits, black material has a tendency to look really cheap unless you pay a fortune for it. The other is that black can look overly sombre at cheery events.

I suggest going with charcoal grey. A cheap one looks much more expensive, with a white shirt and black tie it looks perfectly respectful for funerals of those you are close to but with a brighter tie it looks cheerier at weddings.

Also aim for one with a wool blend. It looks more expensive and is harder wearing. Do not get 100% polyester, it will look awful very fast. Take a look in M&S too, you'll find something with a classic look which if not worn often will last you as long as you fit into it.

    Something like this maybe.

Oh yeah, it's always an idea to buy a second pair of trousers to with the jacket.

    Best menswear do cheaper suits.
Also try the highstreet shops like Next, River Island, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Marks and Spencers etc.
Most of them have websites so you can get an idea of prices online.

I agree with Iguana, grey rather than black!

I agree with iguana, if you're gonna get one suit get charcoal. (Herself doesn't agree but hohoho isn't that part of the fun...)
Debenhams might be worth a look. Picked up my last interview suit during a sale (300+ down to sub 200) and it was far superior to the one I was suckered into by a fawning "suits you sir" eejit in a dedicated menswear shop.

TK Max, I have 2 or 3 suits from there including a Calvin Klein and a Ted Baker ones. Worth a look at least.

Great stuff Iguana, thats the kind of insider information I was looking for. Charcoal Grey it is. Although I did kind of have my eye on a novelty suit, something in purple perhaps.....perfect for funerals. Im joking, thanks again.

There's a pretty amazing suit sale on in House of Frasier in the Dundrum Centre. You can pick pretty decent suits up from less that €100 (they look great and if they're not worn every day they'll last). There's tons of choice. 50% off and 70% off. Large selection too.

By sound of things u buying a suit is bit of a waste, why dont you look at renting. Suits in rental shops are generally top notch. Cost fraction of price.

Loads places online, ive used Cuffs in ashbourne before you could try them.

Sounds like he's attending, not the groom.
Sounds like he doesn't have one decent general purpose suit.
Sounds like he should buy one - every man needs one decent suit (weddings, funerals, interviews, etc etc) and they really aren't that expensive if you pick up a good one in a sale.

M&S do suits, trousers are €30, jackets are €40. Machine washable. I wore one to my wedding, had to groomsmen in the same. Can't go wrong man.

Bring a friend with you go suit shopping.
Aston hire suits and they have a very good reputation. They're in Temple Bar but might have other locations.
