Shocks & Springs

Ok NCT failed slight imbalance in suspension. 60,000 miles on the clock don't think they've ever been changed. I haven't taken them apart yet to check but it seems like a safe bet it'll be the shocks (I'll check them out after I take them apart fully to confirm) I'll replace both of them. My question is should I replace the springs at the same time? My aim really here is the usual time/money don't want to spend more than I have to but I'd like the car to be correct and also don't want to have to take yet another trip to the NCT. Any help would be appreciated.

Hard to know without having a look but 95% chance you will only need dampers (shocks) unless the springs a broken and you would not need to wait for an NCT to tell you if they were.

AS OAP says, once you have them apart check the springs aren't broken. If the imbalance concurs with a broken spring, you could chance changing the springs and test again. Not sure it would be worth the effort of taking this chance though as it is the same labour all over if you have to change the shocks.

It is likely to be the shocks though and there isn't a lot you can tell from them when they're out. You could look for any sign of leakage, which is the usual sign of impending failure or weakness.

60,000 miles does seem low for shocks and springs to be giving trouble unless the car is old or someone has been making it earn its keep on potholed roads!!

No the springs aren't actually broken as you said would have spotted that. I was more wondering givin there age would there be any issues using new shocks and old springs, would it be better to replace the lot?

Irish roads potholes and speed bumps everywhere, that said I haven't personally hit any too hard, but not the first owner. Going by the NCT report it's just the one shock thats causing the issue maybe it was just a bit weaker.

Springs should be fine I'd just replace the shocks
