    Hi Folks.

Its been a few months since I’ve been up ion the mountains, doing a spot of camping, and I’m eager to get going again ASAP.

My question is this…how soon in the year is it a good idea to go up to the Dublin / Wicklow mountains.

The gear we have (sleeping bags, tent, clothing etc) is good but not specialist gear.

Has anyone ever been up in February, and if so, how was it?

Is ground frost a big problem?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance Folks.

There are so many variables to this question Re: Weather,Altitude, etc that as a person with little experience living beside Wicklow mountains here, I personally wouldn't risk it till April at earliest, maybe late March (weather dependent).

But do go sometime, nice experience.

All year round is fine. Just stay within the comfort rating of your sleeping bag and use a kip mat, and you'll be grand. The temperature has dipped much below zero over the last few days, and there has been some rain, so the hills are soggy, though.

In my experience most sleeping bag ratings are "optimistic" ...

I would say, depending on the brand, you might have to take 5 degrees off the rating. Also you will lose serious heat down into the ground in winter. I use a standard foam mat and a thermarest for winter camping as well as a good sleeping bag. I also wear a wooly hat or a fleece balaclava. If it gets a bit nippy in the night I will put on more clothes in the bag, jacket etc.

Also its worth noting that its not the bag that warms you up. You need to be warm getting into it and then the bag should keep you warm. If necessary do a few star jumps or something to warm up before going to sleep, maybe eat a snickers bar to fuel up ...

Maybe you could try out your kit in your own back yard first and see if its up to it.
