Tractor Trailer hydraulic brake conversion

    Hi lads

I've a Quinn tractor trailer (similar to the one you can see in the pics of thread 'identify this plough')

It is fitted with a handrake. I was wondering if it would be possible to convert this to hydraulic braking? I was thinking a small ram mounted on the axle to work the linkages coming out of the drums, is this how hydraulic brakes usually work??

I know it's a relatively small trailer, but when loaded with cattle and moving at 40k I'd feel happier being able to pull up quicker:D. Brakes on our NH aren't the best.

Yes, a ram (or two) is normally at the axle actuating the brake drums. I would renew the brakes if you were doing it as I'm not familar with the trailer and the brakes may not be up to it.

EDIT: You sure it doesn't brake using the hitch, most trailers like that do (just looked again at the plough thread).

No, it's only a handbrake candor.

I've to replace the floor and going to sandblast and respray the chassis when the weather gets a bit better. While I'm at it I was going to look into getting the brakes upgraded to hydraulic. The oul lad had her the last thirty years, they're a great trailer.

She'd be some trailer when i'd have her refurbished and will hopefully last me another 30 years

    Ok just checking.

It sounds good, mechanism should be easy enough to make up, can't find a decent on the web at the moment.

I dare say she will last if she's gone on that long :)
