Thinking of getting a new one courtesy of the scrappage scheme. Looking at 18,700 for a 1.5TDI tom tom edition. Any one any thoughts on this car? Have never driven a renault before.

Compared to a 1.6TDI Golf or Astra Sports Hatch 1.3TDI its a much nice car to drive and a lot cheaper.

Get the higher output 1.5 dCi, 86hp is pretty weedy

Talk to Saab Ed on here if he's still about. There was better prices than that floating around for the 106BHP model last year (the mother got the 106 estate).

I got one last year for a few quid under 16,000.
Bought the 86hp one which does me for now as I came from a mitsi colt (might get it remapped when the warranty expires).
I think the tomtom edition comes a 106 though. Have mine about 10 months and I havent had a single problem with it.
Getting about 1000 km from a tank of diesel and thats all stop start city driving

I thought you could no longer get the 86 and 106, only the 90 and 110 version.

I have the grand megane 86 and I am enjoying it a lot. I'd say the 86 is probably fine in the coupe as it is lighter. In the grand megane it is definitely underpowered if you're going to take 5 adults and a full boot, but for the use I give it it's fine.

Consumption is good. I can do anything between 5.2 to 6.5l per 100Km, so between 1000 and 1200 Km per tank.

Suspension is a bit hard for a french car I think. Driving position is good, plenty of adjustment.

I have only had it for 4 months so not much to say yet in terms of reliability.

The tomtom version only comes in 90 and 110 version as far as I can see.

I have never owned a renault nor know anyone who does, anyone have any reservations about renaults?? (Maybe the fact that I don't know a renault owner speaks for itself!)

No reservations with any Renault since 2008. Reliability should not be a concern, warranty is excellent. Rear visibility is a bit of an issue with the 3 door, big blind spots, but IMO a great looking car.

New models are Euro V emission and 1.5Dci is now 90 or 110. There's a bit more in the deal than €18,500 with scrappage.

Biggest worry about the Megane's is the resale value. It will probably be worth a lot less than the equivalent Focus/Golf/Astra in a few years time, because it's so cheap to buy now.

We sent out 9, 5 door hatches last year (Royale's). 2 have been back in because the driver's door didn't close properly, and I fixed one myself (door latch screws started coming loose). 1 has an intermittent problem that the driver's door won't open from either the inside or outside when it's really cold. Driver was having to climb across the passenger seat to get in and out, but we haven't been able to replicate the issue yet.

SaabEd doesn't hang around any more, but I'd recommend talking to Enda in Joe Norris motors of Navan - 046 902 1312 ;)

I have that problem with the rear door on the driver side. It only happens when it's really cold though. During the last cold snap I could never open it in the morning.

If it was the driver door I would be a very serious bother.

That's the only issue so far with the car.

When I went to look at the new one in the showroom last week, the boot wouldn't open. When I said it to the sales rep he opened the boot of another model. Not sure if this had anything to do with the cold but surely not a good sign.

There was also a little plastic compartment on the passenger side's floor that seemed very flimsy and i KNOW would be broken after a week - such a stupid place to put a compartment.

I reckon the built in tom tom could be the main selling point of this car.

We get that the odd time with the missus 05 scenic. It's something to do with it not being shut properly (only ever happens when its kind of half shut but with the boot its hard to tell, unlike a door) and the little clicky buttons (as opposed to the mechanical door handle that physically pulls the bar on the catch) . What you have to do is lock and unlock the car with the button on the remote and it works.

It's as if the car doesnt know that the door is actually closed and thinks its open so doesnt release the catch.

    .

They've been in Renaults (on Scenics & Meganes) since the Scenic I from 97 and I've yet to come accross a broken one tbh. Scenics have 4 of them (one in each footwell, Think the Megane has 2 in the front, must check ont he mothers car) . They are great places for storage

I managed to pull the one out of the floor when I was checking to see what it was! Thanks for the feedback folks. Any more is welcome!

Just to be sure we're talkign about the same thing here, the storage bin in the floor yeah? I just went out and gave the one in the mothers car a good yanking and its intact. the thing is rooted in under the carpet cos you can see the whole carpet pulling if you give it a good tug. Did you tear the carpet and all?

SSSSShhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh there's a reason i didn't mention which dealer i went to!!

Ya it came straight out - i presume it was storage and was meant to stay intact.

That must have taken some serious amount of strength. Mine seem pretty sturdy.

I also think they are a good idea.

Does anyone else think that naming an edition after a €100 sat-nav is a bit crap? They have this fantastic looking car, I really like the look of them at least, and by all accounts they're a pretty decent machine, and then they stick "tom tom edition" on it :).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 612 ✭✭✭McSpud

Looked at the Megane last year & while the lower model is cheap I felt it was too spartan spec. To get better engine and spec need to pay a good deal more & doesn't appear good value then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭Shannonsider

Anyone know if the tom tom comes as standard on the tom tom edition? was doing the online car configuration and it looks like its 500 extra if you want a sat nav???? surely not!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,610 ✭✭✭Padraig Mor

Standard......hence the name! It's a €500 option for the other models.

No, clunky configurator, it is standard on all Tom Tom models.

Blame the name, not the bhp, when it's a 3 door 'hatch' 86bhp is fine. ;)

It's about as coupe as a tricycle but it ticks most of the boxes for me.
