Details are quite sketchy atm, seems to be an attack on the city of culture offices. Obvious culprits would be militant republicans, although thats not confirmed. No one has claimed responsibility yet.

If so it is in keeping with previous bombings, occurred in the dead of night. No word on whether or not any warnings where issued, damage seems to be minimal which leads me to think that this attack was merely a statement against Derry being a "UK City of Culture" and not one intended to cause huge damage, or indeed kill anyone. Easy enough to understand the reasons why there.

Also, the westlink in Belfast has been closed due to a "suspicious vehicle" probably nothing though.

There's nothing like a "Happy Bomb" to spread peace and joy on a Monday morning.

Derry's in Ireland. Not the UK.

    End of.

Ok so you understand the reasons but don't think it's justified.

Being a City of Culture....whether it's classed as 'UK' or not can only do good things for the city and its image.

They had to drop the 'London' part from the name when it was found it was misleading tourists into thinking there was actually anything worth seeing there.

    Londonderry.

The only word in the English language with 6 silent letters.

There seems to be some sort of media gag on militant republican actions tbh, normalization is the key apparently.

(just telling it how it is)

Does that mean that he would be slightly hesitant?

No, it wasn't "merely" anything. It was a bomb attack in an Irish city, and whether they intended to take life or not is not the point; the fact is that they could not have been certain that life would not have lost, adn yet went ahead with it anyway. Bloody, mindless thugs.

"merely" is a fair word to use when one considers what it could have been.

"Merely" is never an appropriate word when describing an act that posed a threat to the lives and wellbeing of innocent civilians.

Why is it that when a device that is discovered, but not exploded, garners more coverage that has exploded?

AFAIK when it was first talked about a SF MLA (Michelle Gildernew I *think*) criticised it saying Derry was not a part of the UK.

Then when things got going SF were all for it. I reckon its because Derry city is an SDLP stronghold and SF want to take over. Objecting to an award which may bring more tourism/jobs to Derry may not have went down well with the Catholic middle classes.

No not really, sounds like you are accusing me of "explaining away" the bombing of that office, or of supporting it. Which I am not.

You claimed it was "merely a statement" and the reasons for it were "easy enough to understand". It wasn't, and they aren't.
