So let me get this right, not only do you have to pay for the game disc, you have to pay a subscription to play online?

am i correct in saying DCUO is a MMORPG? and so is really an online only game?

This is crazy if this is the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

It's 45 quid in HMV and comes with a free month. 12.99 every 30 days after. It's online only, yeah.

It's a bit excessive to pay €45 for the disc and then a monthly subscription on top.

I will be giving this a miss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,955 ✭✭✭rizzla

I also heard it will auto renew after the sub ends so if you don't want to continue playing make sure to turn off that auto renewal.

Is the game any good? It looks good but im not sure what to make of it. I have a few games i can trade in so should cover the cost.

Thats fairly standard for successful MMO's.
(not counting when they fail after the first month or two and end up 'free to play' and supported by having to buy crap in game.
{and yeah ...before someone says it , there is Guild wars , but that's an exception})

The disc should be less than €45.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,070 ✭✭✭MarkY91

who would pay to play it online?..thats preety pathetic if anyone actualy gets into that scam :L

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,703 ✭✭✭✭Skerries

i think 12 million WoW players alone would disagree with you there, never mind all the other mmorpg's that have millions of players all paying that kind of money
i'm not saying it's right but people make it part of their life and are willing to pay that every month to stay there

and i thought 3 map packs per cod game was bad enough:pac:

It's a service that goes above and beyond what a lot of other games offer, so it's not a scam. A lot of people will want to take part in it, it's a pretty huge affair.

I picked up the game to play it for a month, and it's a great game in itself anyway. I'll see if I'm still into it when they come knocking for more money. If I'm into the community and I'm getting a lot back from the game, I'll go for another month.

I think it should be a free download and then you pay the subscription.

To me paying 45 blips and then having to fork out each month (or quarter/half yr) to actually play the game is a bit excessive.

I'm sure that game stores have had many a person hand over the game at the till, then told them about the subscription bit then the person just said "good luck to ya" and walked off :D

It says it on the back of the box , in large letters ,so they dont have to say anything.
It seems like console oriented people just cant get their head around the idea of a game you pay for , and then pay a sub..
Although in fairness people coming from a PC background couldn't understand how consolers could so readily accept the idea of paid DLC , since we'd been getting free extra content for years.
so different platforms have different customs..and MMOs have been up til recently a PC phenomenon , where the buy the game and pay monthy model is accepted.

..the thread for it over on the (mainly pc based )MMO forum.
..note the lack of "z0mg sony steel r monies , I no pay for both disk and monthly !!!!11one" * style comments ;)

so different platforms have different customs..

They're not customs... I've played an MMO where you only paid for the Sub, you didn't need to pay to get the game and install it.

As for GuildWars, that was suplimented by other MMO's that publisher had out that were subscription based.

And in effect with regards to WoW, TBC, WoTL and Cat are essientially DLC's that are sold off at full price game rates along with subscriptions...

I was interested in DC Universe but when I read you have to pay full price for a game and then Sub as well I was rather put off...

...Anyone who's played MMO's before will tell you the "30 Days Free" is absolutely nothing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭ronkmonster

    It's €179.99 for a lifetime sub vs 12.99 a month or €119.99 for a year.

If you are paying monthly, you'd have paid more than the lifetime sub in 14 months.

I mentioned this in my previous post , most successful large scale MMOs at least start out as "pay for client , pay for service"{i.e. you buy a disk and pay a sub}.
    Wow
    Eve
    SWG
    Lotr
    DnD
    Aion
    Star trek online.
    City of Heroes/Villains
    all started with that model.
If they have financial problems (and a lot of them do ), they may switch to a free to play one.
Smaller, lesser known MMO's (especially the korean ones) operate different systems but they're completely different beasts.

You can't get those on PSN as there are limits to price you can pay.

Some of the recent games that change to free to play were not that bad off but changed when they say the money that free to plays started had to make.

The reason i say this is crazy is because you pay X amount of euro for the game, (say 45) and then on top of that to actually play the game you have to subscribe for an additional 100 per year. i think it is way too much money for a game.

your second point about this being the norm form MMORPG is probably true, but that doesn't make the cost any less excessive.

It will be interesting to see how much the retail price will fall by in the coming months, in the last year or so many high profile releases has fallen significantly in price in the months following release. I agree with the point HYgro made about the free download, or even a reduced retail cost for the disc, as the package currently offered is offensively excessive.

as an aside does anyone know what the expected life cycle of the game is?

Enjoying the hell out of this game. Much better then I expected. If PSN+ subs get a discount I'll keep it for a second month. If not....I'll have to see.

    Game is pure heroin.

    Question:
Does anyone know if you are 'matchmade ' with 3 other players for Alerts or if you have to organize a team of 4 before you get started?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭Quandary

Just building my first proper superhero now!

Had a quick play with a hastily made superhero just to check rhw world out. Liking it so far!

This game is class. The amount of battles going on around Metropolis alone is deadly. Be careful not to chase a villain/superhero for too long. Got ambushed by a load and got my ass kicked!

Gamestop are completely sold out of this game and as of yesterday Amazon was all out too. So there's obviously a PS3 fan base there already.

Really Really enjoying this game! Finding it hard to find a good group or league to join though. And high wait times on alerts and pvp content putting me off re subbing.

Im on the justice for all server by the way and the names quizacotal.

I am also a hero. I am willing to switch server and sides though if allot of boardsies are elsewhere!
