1 week old iPhone4, 4GB downloaded through 3g - Help!

My girlfriend bought an iPhone4 just over a week ago and checked her data usage today - apparently she has used around 4GB, mainly in 2 separate bursts of 2GB. we have it connected to wifi at home and she hasnt done any intentional large downloads outside.

we need to find an app that monitors useage (if possible on an app by app basis)

as its a new phone there arent many apps on it. the one im thinking it might be is "tunein" a raido app that seems to stop when the stop button is pressed but keep downloading in the background(!?) from http://www.tunein-radio.com/support.html:

How do I stop the app from streaming?

To stop streaming, tap the Stop button (square icon) on the Now Playing view. You can also change the "Pause in Background" setting to OFF to disable streaming in the background when audio is stopped. (Settings are found in the main Settings app under TuneIn Radio.)

that is one of the most infuriating things i have ever read in an FAQ.

    thanks!

DataUsage. Input your monthly allowance and it tells you what you've used etc.

    Delete that radio streaming app.

Jaysus, thats some usage. Sneaky stuff too

If you double click the home button, a shelf will appear under the home screen (or app if you have one opne) and you can see all the apps you have running. If you hold them for a second or two a red delete badge appears. You can close down whatever apps you don't want running in the background here.

    Thanks for highlighting this problem.

As most of the DL was on WiFi I don't think this gets counted in your usage [it doesn't on mine].

    Let us know, thanks.

are you checking your data useage on the phone (in settings) or are you checking your actual mobile usage on your (3,o2,vodafone,meteor) webpage?
i use my phone constantly and a lot of the time on 3g for streaming football from apps like justin.tv & loads of streaming radio etc and rarely hit 500mb in a month.

afaik the data usage in the phone settings is your total data usage and that includes wifi (open to correction here)

Was gonna say the same as barryd09.

AFAIK, the data usage counter on the phone tracks all data, irrespective of whether it's 3G or wifi. Since you're hooked up to wifi at home, I'd imagine most of the downloading was done through that.

Check your 3G usage online or through customer care to set your mind as ease.

It states "Cellular Network Data" on the iphone settings>General> Usage

I think that precludes wifi (and the figures on mine tally)

Data usage displayed on the iphone does not include WIFI usage.
It's just usage through your carrier network.

It's very strange to get 4GB usage in 1 week on Iphone.

However if you installed any radio streaming app and put it on accidently then this is most likely the reason for massive data count.

On average any internet radio stream is anything between 32 and 200 kbps, radio station probably could be around 100 kbps to be in very good quality for listening. Note It's kilo bits per second.

    Now let's do simple calculation:

    100 / 8 (because 8 bits = 1 byte) = 12,5 KB/second

    60 x 12,5 = 750 KB/ minute = 0,75 MB / minute

    1 hr = 60 min, so 60 x 0,75 = 45 MB per hour

So by playing internet radio with fairly decent quality of 100 kbps, you are pulling 45 MB an hour.

Very possible to reach 4GB usage data in 1 week if that thing was on for the most of time playing in the background.... becareful with such apps...
