Best way to preserve laptop battery?

So I have been told a couple of different ways to get the most out of your laptop battery. On one hand your apparently supposed to be only connected to the mains when charging the batt, and when its full your to let it drain to near 0% and then charge again. Basically never leave it connected to the mains if the battery is 100%.

The other is to only use the battery when you absolutely have to, otherwise leave it connected to the mains at all times as you only get 500-700 charges before a battery life begins to dwindle.

Just checking if anyone knows the definitive way to go about this? Sorry if there is already a thread on this, couldn't find one for it specifically!
