"The Department of Finance is conducting an investigation into bonus payments made to Bank of Ireland staff in the wake of the bank guarantee, it emerged today".

Its not really at all surprising given that we now know the banks have been lying for a while. Its worrying though if these people are allowed to remain in their jobs that nothing will ever change in those institutions.... ever

Of course the investigation will be as effective as tits on a bull.

    True
I wonder will a change of government change the attitude towards the banks. As in, will they be held to account for their lies and what they have cost the country?

    Nothing changes obviously.

Thickos running this country and the banks.

I think a more accurate title would be:

Media/opposition parties spin a non-story to make it sound like a major controversy in order to further their agenda. Dumb ass irish mob loves it and giggles as the realise that "banker" sounds like "wanker". Much hilarity ensues.

I know the banks were never a home for the brightest and best ;)

You would hope so, but I fear it won't happen. They'll click their fingers and the saps in government building will obey accordingly.

    Hell no.

Do you think the opposition or the media need to spin stories at this stage to make the banks or Fianna Failure look like incompetent crooks?

The truth is totally damning. No need for spin.

Jesus was right over 2,000 years ago, when He up-ended the money lenders tables and threw them out of the temple.
Not much has changed in the meantime.

Hell yeah. That's their job. That's what we ask them to do. Newspapers wouldn't sell to the masses if all they contained was honest, impartial, fact-filled articles.

What is the truth? and what is so damning about it? Just like the AIB fiasco before xmas, a bunch of people were paid according to their contracts. What's the big friggin deal? You hate "bankers"? well, good, you've got your way - they are not getting paid anywhere near as much as they used to (and now they are suffering from serious brain-drain). But I couldn't care less about whether or not some employees got their full wages back in 2008 or not. It really is just a non-story.

I don't hate 'bankers' at all. But I'm against socialism for the rich. I'm wouldn't be surprised if there's 'brain drain', but I'm not too worried about it. The effectively nationalised banks are a busted flush and will be run down and probably acquired by non-zombies from abroad when they have stabilised in a few years time. Fianna Failure's desperate and pointless attempts to keep the banks 'Irish' will have been a catastrophic failure costing the taxpayers tens of billions.

Well, by "we", I meant the bulk of the irish people.

But what has this got to do with the story in question. I disagree with this paragraph though, but that would be getting off-topic.

My whole point about this thread/story is that it is a BS non-story. There's a million and one more important things to discuss, but this is what the opposition politicians and media love (because, in turn, it gets them voters/customer), so it's what's getting discussed.

I agree it's no big deal, but I guess it's just another example (as if we need one) of how the banks are continuing to run rings around the government and the taxpayer, even though by rights they should all be out of jobs, every last one of them...
In a written reply, Mr Lenihan said previous information given to his department by Bank of Ireland “to the effect that no performance related bonuses were paid to staff was incorrect, as it did not take into account 'contractual bonuses' which were performance related”.
“This failure by the bank led to erroneous information being placed on the Dáil record on December 1st,” his reply said.

Unfortunately, they're still in control and fleecing the sheeple! (they're not that thick)

The old saying "he who pays the piper, names the tune" still holds true, the banks & bondholders still have the money.
The only thing that's changed is the fact that the banks now make the piper pay for playing the tune!

Are these bonuses performance related? and if so, what on earth have they performed except ruination ?

Bankers overpaid, says RBS chief Sir Philip Hampton

Large numbers of bankers are paid more than they are worth, the chairman of Royal Bank of Scotland has conceded.
Sir Philip Hampton told the BBC that too many average investment bankers were getting above average pay.

What! the penny's finally starting to drop with these leeches!
