Keep pressing F8 as your comp boots up. You can then choose to boot in safe mode and login with the default admin account. From this you can add/change/delete accounts and passwords.

I have heard it mentioned that this can prevent you from accessing files that were encrypted under the old account/password but I'm not sure.

Yes if you reset the password you won't be able to access EFS files, they are the ones with the green names,

not too sure if you can roll back the SID later on if you do remember the password

There is a password reset disk (google it) that will allow you to reset the password. To do this you will need physical access to the machine and if you have physical access a Dos 5 floopy disk and NTFSdos would also allow you to access non encrypted files (or you could use a linux boot disk to view files or install a second copy of windows )

people reuse logon passwords for websites and email so it would be very bad form for anyone to suggest password cracking :mad::mad::mad::mad:

    Encrypting File System

    Microsoft Link

Just read up on it there after Cap'n Midnight mentioned it.

It seems to be something you have to manually enable, so if you have never encrypted any folders on your disk (or any other user) then I don't think you have to worry about it.

Thanks for the help but I am not sure what ye mean EFS Files (greens names)??

when you compress a file in NTFS the name turns blue
when you encrpt it the name turns green

the only reason why people mention EFS is that unless you made a password recovery floppy when you went out of your way to encrpyt files (or allowed others permisions to see them) then there is no way of recovering them, ever , without the pasword of the person who is allowed see them ( and recreating a use with the same password won't work either, it has to the bt eoriginal user)

simply put, it's warning you of the one big unrecoverable gotcha if you change passswords - it doesn't appy to the vast majority of users, but when it does it appplies big time
