Home Heating: Leak? or Stolen?

We filled our oil tank and within a week it was gone. For most of the week after the tank was filled we could get a whiff of oil outside - coming from the back of the house where the tank is. This happened once before when we half filled the tank (4 weeks prior to the full tank fill).

The soil beneath the external pipes connecting the tank to the underground piping smells of oil. There is no sign of an above ground leak beyond the smell of oil on the soil - we wonder is it beneath the ground/house?

If the oil leaked underground throughout the week after the tank was filled could that have been the smell of oil we were smelling? And, is it possible that the ground soaked up the oil which is why we are no longer smelling the oil outside?

It could have been stolen I guess but 900L seems a lot for someone to take from a house where people are present near on 99% of the time.

    Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I've ever seen an example of a situation needing good professional help, this is it. Plumber A.S.A.P.

Yes I agree call a plumber, sounds like a leak to me but oil theft is not uncommon even in occupied houses.

We're renting so have to leave it to the landlord to sort out a proper examination of the pipes and tank etc.

A leak would be a total pain but stolen oil would be so galling!

    Thanks for your replies.

I`m afraid your at the point where you need a professional, the supply pipe needs clearing and pressure testing, oil in the ground is a serious health hazard and unfortunately for your landlord it will be an issue for enviormental health as this oil will work its way into the water table.

Should we stop using water from the tap? We've got little kids so am particularly concerned about making sure they are ok.

Also, if the oil had been stolen, would it be typical for spillage to happen and cause oil to sit on the soil? I'm trying to get an understanding of the workings of oil - we have come from a house that was working from a gas supply. I think it's important for us to know as much as we can as we will be heavily reliant on the landlords information & assurances.

    Thanks again for your help.
