Hi there :) Well, the good news is you've taken the first step, you've said that you want to make changes, so kudos to you for that! It can be very daunting when you start out at first with all the information that's out there, so take it one step at a time. Make one change each week that you know you can stick to. Set achievable goals that will help keep you motivated and on top of things.

For example, Week 1 could be eating no take aways or eating no crisps and going for two 30 minute walks.

Week 2 could be eating no take aways/ crisps and swapping sugary cereal for porridge or sugar free muesli and walking three times a week.

What kind of things do you eat at the moment?

There's loads of information to help you get started in this thread too.

I started a new job monday,so up at seven and have fruit & fibre with orange juice, coffee around eleven, lunch at one, soup or a sandwich then dinner at seven(started using a smaller plate)and i can keep control of portions cos im cooking for myself, mabye a yoghurt after, before this i worked in my parents shop,so would graze all day on scones, ham, white roll 4 lunch, crisps and biscuits in the eve:o,so what im eating now is even a change!walk 15 mins to bus in morn, and 15 back in the eve, altho not a big water drinker, more a tea person! its just kinda like eekk!! where to start!:eek: i want to get healthy,my bmi is far too high and im onli 20,i have to kick myself up the backside!

well you've definitely already started to make a big change so that's great. You're not actually eating an awful lot, you could have some fruit and maybe a small handful of nuts or a spoon of peanut butter on some oatcakes as a snack between meals (those are just suggestions, there's loads of snack ideas out there).

Well done for starting to eat healthily, now the challenge is to stick to it! Sometimes when you have a crappy day or you're feeling tired/ bored/ annoyed it's easy to fall back onto bad habits and they can undo all the hard work you've done all week. See if you can find better alternatives to the old regulars that you used to rely on (fruit salad instead of ice cream, roast sweet potatoe instead of chips etc.).

It's the small changes that make big differences so you're already doing really well :)

My bmi is far too high and I'm only 20

I recommend you use a simple bodyweight scales (as well as how you fit into your clothes) to measure your progress. BMI calculations are not accurate and can cause a lot of people unneccessary worry. See -> http://www.rti.org/publications/abstract.cfm?pub=11370
I have to kick myself up the backside!

No need at all to berate yourself for your current situation. All you need to do is to keep making gradual changes to the way you eat and exercise. It's a lifestyle change, not a quick-fix. As a result, you don't need to do anything drastic in terms of crash diets.

A good start would be to introduce a 30 minute walk every day. Do this for 3 weeks and you'll soon reach a point whereby you can't imagine not going for a walk every day!

Best of luck and keep us posted as to your progress.

    Paul

    Oh boy wheat resistance.
    Welcome to my world hehe.
I cant touch anything with yeast, grains or carbs/sugar for the most part and it did take about a year before i could stop going on binges.
It really took me time to just create a habit of eating the right things and what was important for me was finding something tasty as a treat that wasnt too damaging to my diet so i dont need to go on a binge ussually.
for me its glenisk yogurt with chopped up fresh fruit.
Although this has sugar in the fruit i am finding with exercise each day this seems my best compromise and keeps me on the straight and narrow :)

For me i found switching to salads as the bulk of my meals was handy and tasty.Make my own dressing with apple cider vinegar and balsamic.
With that then i can add all sorts of meats like a homemade burger without a bun or chicken (you could grill or oven cook it) or even have the chicken cold in a salad box for your lunch in work the next day.
My advice is to do some online research on what you need and what foods are.
Like meat = protein certain veg = carbs other veg = fibre and so on.
When i did this it helped me see what i needed to eat alot easier and i now cook every meal from fresh food and find it easier to stick to this diet.
Recently the hard par has been replacing rice as i am so used to either rice or potatoes (carbs) as a side to any sauce i cook. But with a side salad this has been easy and im also getting used to eating stir frys without noodles or rice or any carbs.
Just lots of carrots fried in coconut oil(im on a high fat diet though so first learn what you need personally first).
It might be hard work getting into the habit at first but with some regular execise and the ability to eat alot of salad as low calories you will get used to the idea and will feel much better in yourself im sure.

Oh i used to not bother drinking water also.
Ive been putting sliced lemon or lime into mine and that helps me drink alot more than ussual.

Hmmmm i think your right, research would be the best option, its just all new, eeekk!!going food shopping tonight so at least i can start into it sooner rather than later! ive had it for a long time i just kept eating wheat n suffered the consequences(my own fault!) ive seen the wheat free pasta and that in tesco, and aa little bakery beside where i work bake fresh spelt bread every day(did sum research at lunch!)so are potatoes completely out of the question????:eek::eek:
