Rabbits

I gave the ferret away last week with a view on getting a better one later on in the year. But between now and then is there any way to keep netting rabbits.

I was told you can buy "smokers". Net the holes as usual and then drop a few smokers into one hole and then cover it. THe smoke is then forced down the warren and the rabbits will bolt. Anybody tried this..?? Is it any good..??? Where will I get the "smokers"... Im looking online but cant for the life of me find any

Is there any other ways to make the rabbits bolt, apart from smoke and a ferret..???

Tried it before with hay or straw. Had the wind to my back make sure to blow the smoke down the burrow. Never got any and gave it up soon after, after nearly setting fire to about 5 acres of gorse  A lot of frantic stamping sorted that out;)

Have smoked rats with an old chainsaw with the chain removed a terrier or two and a sprong and you will have right craic anyway:D

my neighbour was telling me one day that when he was young they used to bolt them with sulphur candles, light the candle and place it in the hole and net the rest of them, he thinks its banned now though as this would be going back 55-60 years, i think the candles are used in fumigation now

If you get some rags and soak them in diesel for 24 hours. Shove these down every borrow on your ground. The smell will cause the rabbits to vacate their burrows. It is very slow acting and is used to push rabbits into cover where they can be hunted the following day with spaniels. Never used it but have it on good authority that it works and will try it some day.

get down to the sea and collect a few large jack shore crabs under weed and rocks, then what you do is get a small piece of candle 1/2 inch or so and wax it to crab's back then light the candle, place crab in burrow and the crab will run down burrow trying to get away from the flickering light:D cheap ferrets that you wont mind loosing;) the rabbits wont know what hit them;)

    Home made smoker!

    smoker001.jpg

I've never used a smoker for catching rabbits, but i have read up on it, and it will work in certain situations!

I think it's effective if there's only a handfull of burrows close together, and not much good with large warren's!

But as the lads said already, why go to so much hastle when a ferret is far cheaper, and does a much better job than any smoker could!

If you really wan't to get a smoker, you'll find them on line, and they are also advertised on the Countrymans weekly magazine!
They cost around 100 Euro or more, and their not ment to be as good as the homemade one's!

€180 for a ferret:eek: is an absolute rip off, you can pick up ferrets for as little as a £10 up north....smoke bombs work, used to do it as a kid for greyhound men:D ,best place to get them is in joke shops and when you get them get coloured ones, they worked the best... I'd prefer to use a ferret better crack
