iOS 4.3 - Wi-fi hot spots, mute side switches and uber multi-touch

4.3 is lookin' pretty sweet. So far it adds Wi-Fi hot spot, Airplay access for apps, new iPad gestures and the option to change the side switch to mute on the iPad.

Think that's all the stuff that's confirmed by people using it....

There's also talk that it will add subscription options to iTunes.

Also pretty sweet is the iPad can connect to the iPhone wi-fi hotspot without and crappiness.

Only a few months behind Android I see. :D

Most of the stuff looks as though it's for the iPad... guessing Apple are basing the update around the iPad then?

In all fairness - nothing really needs doing to iOS, it's good at what it's supposed to do. I see updates as just 'unjailbreaking' iDevices now-a-days. :p

I just wish iOS would have a fast toggle for bluetooth on the phone the same as the lock orientation, or even if you could tap the statusbar to enable/disable things like bluetooth/wifi (Like SBSettings, but Apples version of it).

Yep by far and away my biggest annoyance. My phone stays connected to my Bluetooth car kit when I'm in the house so I'd love quick access to Bluetooth.

Throw in a better notification system and I'm a happy bunny. They need to rip off Android or WebOS.

I guess Apple would never do something as simple as that. SBSettings and Winterboard are probably the 2 best reasons to jailbreak. Should be easy for apple to implement both things themselves and remove the need to jailbreak for some.

Incidentally, what is the apple lock orientation toggle? Didn't know there was one tbh, just use sbsettings!

I think Apple need to allow more control over the multitasking too. It seems at the moment that if you exit an app with the home button the only thing that determines if it stays in the background is whether or not the app itself supports it. This can be very annoying when you end up with a whole load of apps running in the background eating memory..

Your Bluetooth car kit should disconnect from the iPhone once the ignition is switched off and there is no active call. All car kits support this feature once they're properly installed, otherwise your installer used a permanently on 12V power source and not one that gets cut off when the ignition is switched off.

Multi-touch gestures looks great. Similar to how many apps, such as Reeder, already work. Can't wait.

And I'm very pleased to see they are giving us an option about the rotation lock.

Even if Apple tried to implent what you can do with a jailbroken device, it still wouldn't be as good. Like even Multifl0w or whatever it's called is so much better than Apple's version off App Switching imo. I'm still on 3.1.2 jailbroken with Blackra1n and don't plan on updating as I don't need to! :D

I prefer a permanent 12v feed myself. Handy if you are in the car with the ignition switched off.

Oh right. It came with the car so I dunno how it was installed. Its a bury take and talk and the cradle is designed for Nokia n95 so I'm glad it works at all tbh.

Going off topic sorry but I presume this will wear the battery down with extended use?

I would imagine that you would have to be on the thing for quite a while to impact on the 12V car battery ;). Never had any issues - i'm sure the power required for the car kit supply is negligible. Anyway, you are right, BOT !

Is this why the latest firmware has no Jailbreak yet - they're waiting for this to come out and then applying the Jailbreak to it?
Otherwise it could be fairly annoying for some. I've held back on installing the current firmware to wait for the Jailbreak. Would hate to have to wait again for this.

Actually, 4.3b1 is already jailbroken :P

Because of the exploit they use to jailbreak current iDevices, the only way to fix the vulnerability is to revise the actual hardware. No amount of software updates can fix it.

That said, the exploit they use provides only a tethered jailbreak. They use another to untether it, these exploits can be fixed via software :/

Update: 9 to 5 Mac notes that Apple has clarified in the documentation accompanying the new build that the four- and five-finger iPad gestures added in the initial build will not be included in the public release of iOS 4.3 and are simply being included in developer versions so that Apple can obtain input from developers on their functionality.
This feature will not be enabled in iOS 4.3 for customers, but we are providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with your apps.

    Awww :(
