Hey, Getting rid of my Golf GTI and selling my soul to the devil and going diesel. Looking for something a bit lively and a little different if possible, currently considering Saab 9-3(150), BMW320D, Honda CTDi, Audi A4 etc etc...budget of about €8k . Top choice at the moment is probably the Saab 93 Vector Sport but Im still to be sold on it! Any suggestions ?? Head gettting a bit recked researching...Cheers

Should mention max engine size of 2.2 l !

Why are you selling you GTI? Have you looked at a Skoda Octavia vRS?

If you're a glof gti fan would you consider the GT-TDI??

My bro has one and its the most fun diesel ive ever driven, and its the 02 model so i can imagine that the newer one would be even better.

Other options for me would be the
    525 diesel
    Accord Ctdi
even the Mondeo tdci 130bhp is fun to drive

P.s. the mondeo thing wasnt a hint to look at my signature lol, just noticed that now

How is an A4 or a 3 series a little bit different? If you want a bit leftfield how about a Subaru Legacy boxer diesel. Stylish, four wheel drive, reportedly reliable and fairly exclusive. I'd be having a gawk and a drive at least.

Ive never driven the E46 320d but if the E90 is anything to go by, it's a really great car. I've driven it a good few times and love it more each time! Far better than the A4 IMO

Wont get a leggy diesel for 8k.
    What about an Alfa GT?

Here we go again with the Octavia suggestions!

Might be hard to find an Accord for 8k, but if you do, then it's a hard car to beat. The A4 isn't as good as the Accord, the Saab is not the best built car in the world, although apparently the Vector is supposed to be better, other options are more expensive, so hard to know.
By the way, there's only about €100 difference in tax from a 2.2 Accord to a 2.5 BMW 525d, so a good E39 525d might be found for 8k, be tight though.
You may find a Volvo S60 diesel in the mix for that. Bit boring, but realtively good none the less.
Might as well suggest the Avensis too, it's dull, but I'd sooner an Avensis D4D to a 1.9 TDi Octavia.

In fairness it's a viable alternative. Same as a GTD but cheaper...and times are tough:p

No competition, Alfa GT 1.9 jtdm. 150bhp as standard, can be remapped to 190+ and more torques than you can shake a stick at. Very reliable common rail diesel engine. Tried and trusted chassis & floor pan from other alfas. Stunning car and beautiful to drive, and 50+mpg. Leave the Golf to Cowen and the bankers. Theres a few examples of 05/06 models on Autotrader for <10k, loads in the UK.

unless its an e39 m5 you'd be doing well to find an e39 for above 8k nowadays, the youngest is 11 years old. and unless the op is into 6cyl there wouldn't be much gain, just 13bhp over an e46 320d.

Keep the GTI, so what if its over 10 years old??

So it's a Mk IV, which wasn't great new.

    Nice grab handles, though.

Agree, beautiful car but should have said preference is a 4 door saloon.

You won't get a genuine, clean, low mileage E39 for less than 5k with a well documented history. If you spend much less than 5k on one, then expect to spend more in a short time.
I'd go for the 6cyl for the extra torque. Early 320d's had 136bhp.

No one yet pointed out there are no GT TDIs. Just rebadged comfortlines. How about a 406 saloon?

Nice motor with low miles, however, its a 2.0 Diesel saloon thats 7 years old.
The equivilant VW/ford variant can be got for thousands less. (Passat, Mondeo, etc)
I know its a Jag, but still.
On the plus side, the chassis is from a Mondeo (good) and the engine is from PSA (also very good).
So are you willing to pay for badge snobery? Mind you, I would kike to own one myself.

Interesting thread... I have a 06 GTI that bought new and many days I think of doing a swap/trade for a good diesel but figures just don't stack up as I am going to lose anyway I look at it; so best just spread the cost and keep buying petrol for the beloved GTI:D

I plan on keeping the GTI for 10 years as its the only way I can get my value out of it. Wife has a 2.0TDI S-Max and it just goes for ever on a tank and has a nice bit of poke in it - then sometimes I drive my Dad's 1.4 Golf and its painful.. gotta ask him if something is wrong with it when I try accelerate! But the GTI is just great fun.

All said... I dream of getting an M5 too so I have big plans to get a weekender in about 18 months.

What's that expression... jump from "frying pan into the fire" :p

The youngest E39 is only 7 years old - they were available right up until early 2004!....but as you say - not many, if any over 8k, unless its an M5

    2004 E39

And if you meant E39 M5's....the youngest is, I think, 9 years old, the last was 2002
