Blimey. While we were all distracted by the rumoured it's-so-real-but-they-just-won't-confirm-it Sony PlayStation Phone, games industry publication MCV is reporting that the next iteration of the Sony PSP (that's PlayStation Portable don'cha know) the PSP 2 will be officially unveiled at a press conference in Tokyo on 27 January.

MCV says games publishers were informed last year of Sony's plans, and that some of Sony's biggest developers are already toiling away on titles for the new console. That means when it does become official, there should be some games for Sony to show off as well.

We're not sure yet what the PSP 2 will have inside it, but considering how smart phones have taken off recently, we'd hope for a few mobile-esque features, such as 3G connectivity and Web browsing.

We'd also like to see some seriously meaty hardware, to keep the PSP ahead of the curve when it comes to mobile gaming -- you'd be surprised at the kind of gaming kicks devices such as the iPhone 4 are capable of.

The PSP 2, if and when it becomes official, will also be up against Nintendo's 3DS console, which we've already previewed. The 3DS offers 3D gaming without the need for wearing dorky glasses, and we like the look of it very much.

What do you think? Is this too little, too late from Sony? Or do you love your PSP and can't wait to see what it comes up with next? The comments section and our Facebook wall are the place to vent that spleen.

I hope they've enough time to change the private key!! ;)

What are we expecting here anyway?
    2 cameras? 1 hi-def, the other vga.
    wifi?
3D support via hdmi output maybe?
    touchscreen.
better interaction with the ps3, maybe someway used with PSMove?

regular 3d, someone from sharp told me in november that they were doing the screens for, and i quote, "the 2 new portable consoles that will be out in the next 12 months"

I'm really excited about all this new hardware, but it's the software that's going to be the deciding factor for a lot of people. The moment I heard '3DS' 'Professor Layton' and 'Phoenix Wright' in the same sentence I was hyped for the 3DS. I'm hoping for someone to come out with something beyond expectations like that game but for the PSP2.

There are rumours of Uncharted Portable, that could be good if handled by a talented studio like Ready at Dawn. The LocoRoco studio has been quiet for a while, as has Sony Bend, Clap Handz and BigBig Studio. They're probably all working on PSP2 projects then as the first party PSP release schedule goes all quiet after White Knight Chronicles PSP and Patapon 3's release.

Reports claim Q4 release, dual sticks, HD screen; source tells us that’s a “reasonable description”.

Reports today claim that Sony’s long-rumoured PSP successor is as powerful as the PlayStation 3, with a source confirming to us this morning that the leaks are a “reasonable description” of the device’s capability.

MCV reports that Sony has made the claim to its licensees, and is pitching the HD handheld as a “high-end portable equivalent” of PS3.

The console is expected to be announced at a modest event in Tokyo on January 27. A fourth quarter launch – possibly as early as October – has been reported, and the system includes an HD screen.

Perhaps most importantly for Sony’s intent to pitch the device as a portable PS3, the device apparently has dual analogue sticks. Sony is specifically asking developers to focus on deep, content-rich game experiences to differentiate PSP2 from app-focused smartphones.

While the PSP redesign PSPgo dropped support for UMD media in favour of downloads, Sony intends to keep retail on side by making use of a media format, though it will also offer downloads of smaller games and apps through PSN.

According to a source with experience of working on the device, the reports are “a perfectly reasonable description of the hardware’s capabilities.” Our source also notes that in comparison to 3DS, PSP2’s processing power is “comparable to the difference which exists between PSP and DS.”

If true, the decision to announce the device just eight days after Nintendo’s European 3DS launch event, in Amsterdam on January 19, indicates confidence on Sony’s part that its PSP successor can compete with Nintendo’s hotly anticipated 3D device, which is released in Japan next month and is expected to make its European debut in March.

Portable equivelant of PS3... Wow I think I am sold.. Cant wait to hear more... If Uncharted Portable is true I can see the handheld being released in November alongside Uncharted 3 maybe? Or around that date... That would be awesome.. Now I may go get a job and get saving :P... Also going to get 3DS as its features are awesome and the handheld games that Nintendo publish are awesome.. Would love if the PSP was as good online as the PS3... Hopefully they have all the same features as PS3 with the PSP 2 e.g adding friends etc.. That was one of the failures of the PSP Go imo.. I got it thinking it would show friends playing games etc but it didnt..

It was hinted at before that with the PSP2 you might be able to play your PS3 games on the move, ie. playing a bit of uncharted at home, hopping on the bus and picking up where you left off.

Sounds pretty awesome, doubt it'll happen though!

That would be sick... All I would have to do is buy a car, and get someone to drive me to work. I cannot see myself playing whilst walking on the street. The last time i tried to read the metro while walking I nearly got hit by a car.

    The idea sounds brilliant.

Yeah that would be pretty damn awesome alright... But would the PSP 2 be capable of the likes of Uncharted?... If this is true though I would lash out 500 quid for it... Would be worth every penny aswell :)
